big-newcastle-conf-8nov

The annual conference of Newcastle University’s Institute for Sustainability (IfS) will take place in London (Chapter Spitalfields, 9 Frying Pan Alley, London E1 7HS) on 8 November 2016 from 10am to 4pm.

Titled ‘Sustainable Futures: Research, Policy and Practice’, this event will focus on research, policy and practice that will help achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goals, exploring the challenges in sustainability research at a range of scales – regional, national and international – with a view of  enhancing collaboration among academia, industry and policy.

The conference will feature:

  • A keynote speaker: Professor Patrick Paul Walsh (Professor of International Development Studies at University College Dublin and Senior Advisor to UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network SDSN, New York);
  • Some of the University’s sustainability researchers, led by Professor Phil Taylor (Director IfS); and
  • Sustainability experts from industry

The day’s programme comprises four sessions.

Session 1 (What is the role of academia in helping to meet the SDGs and where should they have input in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development?) will explore how academic research could play a greater role in policy and practice for sustainable development.

Session 2 (Addressing global challenges with integrated solutions) will introduce research from Newcastle University researchers on addressing global challenges for sustainability through integrated solutions.

Session 3, a roundtable session (How to bring research to policy for sustainable development), will bring together experts in research, policy and practice to identify how academic research and demonstration can inform policy for sustainable development in areas of air quality, energy, food, water, agriculture and waste.

A poster session will showcase some of the University’s sustainability research projects.

Nexuses of the Urban workshop | Interactions between Water, Energy and Food Provision for Sustainable Cities

BIG-NexusUrbanWorkshop

A Nexus workshop, titled ‘Nexuses of the Urban: Interactions between Water, Energy and Food Provision for Sustainable Cities’, will take place at the University of Sussex from 12 to 13 May 2016.

Workshop participants will take stock of what kind of plural understandings of ‘urban nexuses’ are emerging, produced by (partnerships between) activists, communities, think tanks, corporations, and multilateral organizations, natural scientists, humanities scholars and social scientists.

The workshop will particularly reflect on the contribution that different social science perspectives might make in understanding urban nexuses, and how social scientists might effectively participate in inter- and trans-disciplinary initiatives. Another aspect that will be considered is what kind of policy mechanisms and events might support the pursuit of the partnerships for developing new understandings.

The programme will be structured around the following orienting questions

  • What divergent framings and understandings of ‘urban nexuses’ are emerging and why are they important, in what ways and to whom?
  • What are the implications of these understandings and their foci for governance of nexus interactions by public, private and hybrid arrangements?
  • What implications do these understandings hold for political-economic action by, and for alliances between, civil society organizations, businesses and social movements striving for sustainability and justice?
  • What kind of relations (inter- and trans-disciplinary alliances, engagements with the material world) underpin the making of the emerging understandings of ‘urban nexuses’?
  • What new inter- and trans-disciplinary approaches (and concepts) do we need to further understand interactions at ‘urban nexuses’, including the interdependent vulnerabilities associated with access to food, water and energy in cities?

Led by Dr Saurabh Arora from Science Policy Research Unit (SPRU) at the University of Sussex, this event is supported by the core team of Nexus Network.

The Nexus Network

Funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), the Nexus Network is a three-year initiative to foster debate, innovative research and practical collaborations across the linked ‘nexus’ domains of food, energy, water and the environment. It brings together researchers, policy makers, business leaders and civil society to develop collaborative projects and improve decision making in these areas.

The Network’s aims are to:

  • Encourage debate, fund innovative research and improve decision making across the linked ‘nexus challenges’.
  • Support interdisciplinary, cross-sector collaborations
  • Enable researchers and stakeholders to develop and share new methodologies, data, conceptual frameworks, skills and practices directed towards nexus challenges.

Its partner organisations are:

  • Faculty of Social Sciences | University of Sheffield
  • Science and Technology Policy Research Unit (SPRU) | University of Sussex
  • College of Social Sciences and International Studies | University of Exeter
  • Social, Technological and Environmental Pathways to Sustainability (STEPS) | University of Sussex
  • Centre for Social and Economic Research on the Global Environment (CSERGE) | University of Exeter and University of East Anglia (UEA)

The Nexus Conference 2015 | Scales, Levels & Spaces of the Nexus of Food, Energy, Water & the Environment | #uk_nexus

BIG-NexusConf

The 2015 Nexus Network annual conference, titled ‘Scales, Levels and Spaces of the Nexus’, will take place in London (Mary Sumner House, 24 Tufton Street, Westminster SW1P 3RB) on 19 November 2015 (10am–5.30pm).

Funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), the Nexus Network is a collaboration between the University of Sussex, the University of East Anglia (UEA) and the Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership (CISL).

What is the Nexus?

In the past five years, the idea of the ‘nexus’ has developed a surge of interest as a way of thinking about the interdependencies, tensions and trade-offs between food, water and energy security, in the wider context of environmental change. Because these different systems are inextricably linked, efforts to improve sustainability in one domain without considering wider connections often prove inadequate. This necessitates more integrated approaches that move beyond sectoral, policy and disciplinary silos.

Questions of scale are crucial in addressing the linked nexus challenges of food, energy, water and the environment. The nexus is often framed as a global security problem, but this can obscure alternative understandings of interactions and trade-offs at local, regional and national levels.

The 2015 Nexus Network Conference

Structured around a number of keynote talks and interactive discussions, the 2015 Nexus Network conference will bring together researchers, policymakers, businesses and others interested in the sustainability of food, energy, water and the environment, providing them with an opportunity to identify and strengthen connections between different projects and initiatives in this area.

The event will feature two keynote speakers: Professor Tim Jackson (lead of the ESRC-funded Centre for the Understanding of Sustainable Prosperity CUSP) and Professor Tim Benton (Champion for the UK Global Food Security programme).

The Nexus Network

The Nexus Network is an ESRC funded, three-year initiative to foster debate, innovative research and practical collaborations across the linked ‘nexus’ domains of food, energy, water and the environment.

To achieve these aims, the network funds research; provides opportunities for dialogue and debate; develops a suite of methods, tools and briefing papers; and acts as a UK hub for nexus-related news and discussion.

The Nexus Network consists of four partner organisations:
• Science and Technology Policy Research Unit (SPRU)
• Social, Technological and Environmental Pathways to Sustainability (STEPS)
• Centre for Social and Economic Research on the Global Environment (CSERGE)
• Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership

Science and Technology Policy Research Unit (SPRU) at the University of Sussex is an interdisciplinary research centre in science and technology policy and management. Its research addresses pressing global policy agendas, including inclusive economic growth, energy policy and pathways to a more sustainable future.

Social, Technological and Environmental Pathways to Sustainability (STEPS) Centre, based at the Institute of Development Studies and SPRU, is an interdisciplinary global research and policy engagement centre uniting development studies with science and technology studies. Its cross-cutting work covers agriculture & food; energy & climate change; health & disease and water & sanitation.

Centre for Social and Economic Research on the Global Environment (CSERGE), based at the University of East Anglia (UEA), is a leading interdisciplinary research centre in the field of sustainable development and decision making. It consists of a number of collaborating disciplines including economics, political science, social and group sciences and the natural sciences.

Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership (CISL) is an institution within the University of Cambridge with a mission to empower individuals and organisations to take leadership to tackle critical global challenges. Bringing together business, government and academia, it challenges, informs and supports leaders from business and policy to deliver change towards sustainability.

In the UK, the ESRC is spearheading efforts to support interdisciplinary research and cross-sector collaborations designed to tackle nexus challenges. Further investments are planned over the next three years in order to realise its vision for the Nexus Network, i.e. building a community of researchers and stakeholders that is better placed to tackle nexus interdependencies, trade-offs and decision-making processes.
