BREEAM Awards 2014 | Nottingham’s Energy Technology Building wins Education category award

SML-Nottingham-EnergyTechBldgsThe Energy Technology Building of the University of Nottingham won the Education category award at the BREEAM Awards presentation held in early March 2014 in London.

Launched in 1990, BREEAM (the BRE Environmental Assessment Method) – the world’s first environmental assessment method – is now used in over 70 countries worldwide, offering a variety of social, environmental and economic benefits to its clients.

Energy Technologies Building (ETB) of the University of Nottingham is an exemplar low carbon building dedicated to research and development in sustainable energy technologies.

Built using energy efficient materials and designed to minimise demands for heating, cooling, lighting and ventilation, this showcase building demonstrates a range of low carbon technologies which leads the way towards the government’s ‘zero carbon’ target for all new public buildings by 2018.

Its key elements include daylighting, thermal insulation, external shading, renewable energy, rainwater harvesting, responsible material selection, electric car charging points and ecological habits in the roof.

Designed to achieve a BREEAM ‘Outstanding’ rating, BREEAM’s highest level for environmental sustainability, this building generates more energy than it requires, heating the neighbouring Institute of Mental Health Institute Building.

Online learning is a driver for sustainability, says Dr Speight at HEA-Nottingham seminar

SML-Nottingham-MOOC-seminar

Online learning is a driver for sustainability, said Dr Sarah Speight at a seminar titled ‘Online and open: modelling sustainability and ‘greening the academy’ through E-learning’ at the University of Nottingham on 5 March 2014.

Hosted as part of the Workshop and Seminar Series 2013/2014 of the Higher Education Academy (HEA), the seminar aimed to support colleagues engaged in developing courses on Sustainability, face-to-face and blended as well as online.

The day started with a welcome and introduction by Terry McAndrew (Academic Lead, Digital Literacy, HEA) and Dr Sarah Speight (academic lead of Nottingham’s Green Academy team).

The development team of the ‘Nottingham Open Online Course’ (‘NOOC’) delivered talks on different aspects of sustainability and e-learning with a particular focus on the university:

  • Helen Whitehead: NOOCing Nottingham: a sustainable approach to Open Online Courses,
  • Andy Beggan and Steve Stapleton: Open Educational Resources (OERs) and Sustainability
  • Dr Sarah Speight: MOOCing the NOOC: taking Sustainability to a global audience
  • Dr Neil Sinclair and Dr Mike Clifford: Online learning for Sustainability – strengths and weaknesses

They shared the learning arising from the successful running of the first ‘NOOC’ called ‘Perspectives on Sustainability’, key insights from both development and delivery and the process of translating the internally-facing NOOC into an externally-facing MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) for the Futurelearn platform.

Nottingham’s free online course: Sustainability, Society and You

SML-Nottingham-courseA free online course, ‘Sustainability, Society and You,’ will start on 6 January 2014. Delivered by the University of Nottingham in partnership of FutureLearn, this eight-week course will provide participants with an introduction to the major global issue of sustainability while helping them discover how they can have a real impact on the future.

Although no prior knowledge is required to take this course, participants will be expected to have a mind that is open to new ideas and approaches and also a willingness to reflect upon their own contribution towards a more sustainable society.

This online programme will provide an introduction to the values and principles associated with sustainability and will equip participants with some of the knowledge and understanding needed to inform sustainable decision-making in their personal and professional life. The course is structured as follows:

  • What do we think about sustainability?
  • Sustainability – a historical perspective
  • Big issues for our world
  • Organisations and sustainability
  • Sustaining society, sustaining culture
  • Learning for and through sustainability
  • Case studies in sustainability
  • Sustainability and you

Through videos, readings and discussions, course participants will explore sustainability from a variety of perspectives such as economic, political, social, cultural, historical, arts, engineering, business, learning, geography and personal. They will also be encouraged to look at their own behaviours and to find, produce, share and discuss resources on sustainability.

The course, led by Dr Sarah Speight (archaeologist, educator and The University of Nottingham’s academic lead on Sustainability), will also feature contributions from academics across a variety of disciplines, supported by expert facilitators. It has been put together using material generated by the university and that from third-party ‘Creative Commons’ licensed sources. FutureLearn, a private company wholly owned by The Open University, facilitates this course. It is behind the UK’s first provider of massive open online courses (MOOCs).

The course invites all to join the conversation on Twitter or in blogging with the hashtag #FLsustain.
