Is the education that we are providing adequate to face the challenges that we are facing today? asked Professor Stephen Sterling (Professor of Sustainability Education at the Centre for Sustainable Futures, Plymouth University) in his keynote speech at the 21st anniversary celebratory conference of the EfS programme at London South Bank University (LSBU) held at LSBU on 13 January 2017.

Titled ‘Celebrating 21 Years of EfS: Moving forward in an age of global uncertainty’, the event brought together academics, students, alumni and practitioners, who collectively reflected on the impact of EfS and looked forward to future developments in this important field of education.

The programme featured a keynote, talks, panel discussions, workshops, stories from current students and alumni of the course, a poster exhibition and a celebratory reception.

Welcome and introduction

Welcome

Welcoming the participants, Professor Patrick Bailey (Deputy Vice Chancellor LSBU) highlighted that sustainability is so complex that no single area of expertise can solve the wicked problems associated with it, emphasising the need for an interdisciplinary approach.

He said that it is social justice that needs to be at the heart of sustainability, so that everything else would follow, even environmental protection.

He revealed that he doesn’t believe in climate change because it is not a religion and that, like himself, we all should become climate change critics. He said that there is 98% certainty that climate change is happening and 95% certainty that it is human-driven and warned that the consequences of not taking this clear evidence into account would be very serious.

He congratulated the outgoing course director, Professor Ros Wade, who had been at the helm of the course for the last 21 years from the very beginning.

Introduction

Dr Jaya Gajparia, the new director of the EfS programme, gave an overview of the course.

She said that the EfS course, which offers postgraduate courses from Continued Professional Development (CPD) to Masters level with a range of flexible study modes, including distance learning, spans the theory and practice of EfS, enabling students to explore and expand the role that EfS can play in educational, social, political and economic change.

She also said that the course, which is designed for anyone interested in paving the way for a more sustainable world by way of understanding, educating or promoting sustainability, comprises six modules, with case studies and readings from a range of global regions; they are designed to be applicable to any type of educational or country context.

Moreover, she talked about the roots of the course, which lie the 1992 UN Earth Summit in Rio, Brazil, where a commitment was made to integrate environmental and development concerns in the emerging concept of sustainability while emphasising the importance of education’s role in building a sustainable world. In response to this, she said, a group of development and environmental organisations – with the financial contributions from WWF-UK, Oxfam and the EU – got together with LSBU and the eventual result was this EfS programme.

Finally, she observed that, over the last 21 years, the world’s first ever Masters programme of this kind has continued to grow steadily as a dynamic interface between theory and practice in EfS, with students and alumni from all continents – except Antarctica!

Panel discussion

big-efsconf-03-panel

The panels discussion was on ‘Reflections on the past, planning for the future.’

The panel, chaired by Professor Stephen Sterling (Plymouth University), comprised Professor Ros Wade (LSBU), Dr Paul Vare (University of Gloucestershire), Betty Okot (Alumni from Uganda/ Keele University), Safia Minney (People Tree) and Professor Craig Barker (LSBU). The panellists answered the chair’s questions and then, in the end, questions from the audience.

Professor Ros Wade, outgoing course director, observed that this EfS course has been a collaboration from the very beginning – between environmental and development educators, between academia and NGOs and so on.

She said that EfS not being a fixed discipline or field, the course has been developed in line with solving real world problems, based mainly on practice, enabling students to explore and expand the role of EfS in their own personal and professional journeys.

To her, transformatory aspect is key to the course although which brings in tensions, such as allowing for transformation, emergence, openness and originality vs. learning outcomes.

She revealed that it was people who made the course a resounding success, especially the students.

She also mentioned Journeys around Education for Sustainability, the book that the course published in 2008 from the work of the course participants and directors.

Betty Okot (Keele University), an alumna from Uganda, talked about how the EfS course made her a confident agent of change, elaborating on her work in making positive change in community policing in Uganda.

Dr Paul Vare (University of Gloucestershire) emphasised that the economic goal is too narrow for education and that critical thinking should play a key role of education.

Safia Minney (founder of People Tree) suggested that more pressure should be exerted on governments and corporations to battle modern slavery and that the movie ‘True Cost’ should be shown to teachers.

Professor Craig Barker (Dean, School of Law and Social Sciences, LSBU) said that many countries takes responsibility seriously but international law is constrained by political will.

The session on the impact of the course was chaired by Dr Glenn Strachan (LSBU), who himself was a student on the course and then a co-director.

Students and alumni from Lesotho, Rwanda, UK and Cameroon (on Skype) shared their stories. The course has helped them in different ways, including:

  • Enhancing thinking and practice
  • To become what one wanted to be (now this student wants help others to become what they want to be)
  • To look deeply into the alternatives to the mainstream
  • To effect personal change for good in their own life and space
  • To become confident and effective agents of change

Professor Ros Wade (Chair, London Regional Centre of Expertise RCE in Education for Sustainable Development ESD) revealed how the existence of the course at LSBU was instrumental in the development of LSBU as the host of the RCE London, which is part of the UN University’s global RCE network. She drew attention to the European RCE meeting 2016 that RCE London and LSBU hosted in June last year.

Keynote | Future challenges for EfS

big-efsconf-09-keynote

What’s wrong with education today? Is the education that we are providing adequate to face the challenges that we are facing today? asked Professor Stephen Sterling, delivering the keynote on the future challenges for EfS.

Today, conventional knowledge is not adequate, he observed, emphasising that extraordinary times require extraordinary responses. He viewed the birth of this course as an example of such an extraordinary response from environmental and development education communities.

Good education should enable us to question assumptions, including our own, as this course encourages its students to do so, he said.

Future challenges for EfS are numerous, he said, taking tension as an example, between fragmentation and integration. Other challenges that he had mentioned include staying within fixed boundaries, issues related to labels and identities and obtaining better co-evaluation with society.

Although much more needs to be done, what EfS/ ESD (Education for Sustainable Development) has achieved in the last couple of decades is phenomenal, he observed. For instance, he said, in the 1990s EfS/ ESD was almost non-existent but today it enjoys global influence at the UN level.

New book | Professional development of European university educators on Education for Sustainable Development (ESD)

BIG-UE4SD-book-NEW

A new book, titled Leading Practice Publication: Professional development of University Educators on Education for Sustainable Development in European countries, was launched at COPERNICUS Alliance Conference on Evaluation and Assessment of Higher Education for Sustainable Development in Madrid Spain in November 2015.

This book, which brings together – for the first time – best practice in higher education professional development and Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), presents 13 best practice examples from 10 European countries, namely Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Germany, Greece, Latvia, Poland, Spain and the UK. It is the result of nearly two years of work (2013-2015) on the EU-funded project University Educators for Sustainable Development (UE4SD).

The book | Leading Practice Publication

This publication aims:

  • To provide an overview of the best practice examples of professional development opportunities for European university educators in the area of ESD
  • To inspire the reader to engage in supporting further developments in this field

It is structured around six main chapters:

  • PURPOSE highlights the importance of the higher education (HE) sector in addressing the challenges of sustainable development and in educating the future generation of leaders.
  • POLICY provides an overview of ESD strategy documents and current global developments including the UN Decade on ESD, the Global Action Programme and the UNECE Strategy on ESD.
  • PRINCIPLES deals with basic principles of ESD, teacher competences, quality enhancement and professional development at HE level.
  • EXAMPLES presents information on the selection process and development of the 13 best practice examples from 10 European countries providing university staff development on ESD.
  • REFLECTION summarises on the 13 case studies and provides an overview of key lessons learned.
  • PATHWAYS concludes with key messages and recommendations for future developments.

This publication is expected to serve as a reference point for current best practice in this important field of European higher education.

Two best practice examples from the UK

Among the 13 best practice examples are two from the UK:

  • Green Academy programme
  • Learning for Sustainable Futures programme

Green Academy programme, run by UK’s Higher Education Academy (HEA), is a change programme that brings together staff teams from different universities to plan, develop and implement ESD institution-wide change initiatives.

Learning for Sustainability Futures programme of the University of Gloucestershire provides professional development in ESD for both teaching staff and staff who support student learning.

The project | UE4SD

The University Educators for Sustainable Development (UE4SD) project (2013 to 2016), funded by the European Commission under Lifelong Learning Programme Erasmus Academic Networks (2013–2016), comprises 53 partners from 33 countries across Europe, divided into four regions.

The lead partner, the University of Gloucestershire (UK – North Hub), works closely with three core partners: the Autonomous University of Madrid (Spain – South Hub); Charles University in Prague (Czech Republic – East Hub); and Leuphana University of Lüneburg (Germany – West Hub). Moreover, activities of this project are closely associated with COPERNICUS Alliance – the European Network of Higher Education for Sustainable Development.

The project comprises three distinct stages, building an understanding of the situation at European HEIs and developing an effective response.

The first stage (2014) mapped the status of ESD in higher education and existing ESD professional development opportunities for university educators in Europe. The resulting four regional reports (UE4SD North, West, South, East), which summarised national mapping exercises conducted by the 53 partner institutions, were compiled as part of the State of the Art Report (link below for free download). This report analysed the situation and drew conclusions for all 33 countries across Europe. The mapping exercise showed that ESD is gaining importance in higher education across Europe, but the understanding of ESD and approaches to it differ.

The second stage (2015–2016) includes the development of practical resources for university educators in ESD, building upon the experience gained from the mapping stage of the project. This Leading Practice Publication and an associated Online Platform of Resources are part of this stage. The Online Platform of Resources is a collection of good practice examples of professional development opportunities for European higher education.

The third stage (2016) will include the development of an Academy for ESD in Higher Education based on the methodological materials and other resources collected in the first two stages.

Gloucestershire holds event on Student Experience with EfS – with Plymouth, UEA & Wales TSD as guests

BIG-PostE-UoG-EfS-seminar-150610-MAIN

The University of Gloucestershire (UoG) held its annual Education for Sustainability (EfS) event on 10 June 2015. Titled ‘Raising the Stakes in the Student Experience with EfS’, the event took place as part of the university’s Festivals Fortnight.

This annual event series is the flagship of the university’s Learning for Sustainable Futures Scheme (LSFS). Launched in 2012 as part of the university’s approach to enhancing the quality of learning and teaching across all subject areas, the LSFS is a collaborative initiative between the university’s Sustainability Team and the Academic Development Unit. Through an annual call for project proposals, this scheme provides staff with grants to lead and develop new projects to embed EfS approaches into the curriculum and student learning experiences.

The day started with a welcome by Maureen McLaughlin (Dean of Quality and Standards, UoG).

In her address, titled ‘Promising Futures: 7 Years of Innovation and Change at UoG’, Professor Daniella Tilbury (Dean of Sustainability, UoG) noted that the EfS agenda is moving in the right direction, slowly but steadily and there are many opportunities for EfS action than ever before. She said that the culture of EfS has been embedded in different part of the university in different ways and a learning process is taking place. Although there is much to celebrate, there remains a lot more to be done, she noted.

Speaking on ‘Sustainability and the Student Experience’, Jamie Agombar (Head of Sustainability, National Union of Students NUS) revealed that the fifth HEA-NUS survey on students’ attitude towards sustainable development (which is yet to be published) is indicative of the same positive trend of students preferring sustainability to be embedded in their courses. He also outlined the work of Students Green Fund and Responsible Futures.

The session on welcome and introductions ended with outlining of the event themes by Dr Alex Ryan (Associate Director of Sustainability, UoG) and Professor Sharon Turnbull (Leadership Trust), master of the ceremony.

The programme comprised three main sessions. In two of them, the leaders of the LSFS projects shared their work in areas such as Accountancy, Fine Art, Business, Fashion, Product Design, Sports Placements, Tourism and Libraries.

Session: New EfS pathways for student learning:
• Future Professionals and EfS: Nurturing Responsible Accountants (Michelle Cook, Business School)
• Supporting Sustainability Literacy and Learning through Library Services (Allison Davis, LIS)
• The 2020 Curriculum: Reframing Business Learning Priorities (Colin Simpson, Business School)
• Powerful Placements for Sustainability Skills (Phil Shirfield, School of Sport and Exercise)

SAMSUNG DIGITAL CAMERA

Session: Reshaping the curriculum with EfS:
• Fashion Futures: Designing new Curricula with EfS (Margaret McDonough, School of Art and Design)
• Engaged Citizens: Creating the Future through Fine Art (Katie Pratt, School of Art and Design)
• Designing Sustainable Futures (Michelle Williams, School of Computing and Technology)
• Curriculum for Responsible Tourism Professionals (Angela Kalisch & Richard Harper, School of Leisure)

SAMSUNG DIGITAL CAMERA

In the third main session, a panel comprising guests from three other universities and UoG Student Union’s Greener Gloucestershire team (see main photograph) shared new ideas and initiatives on engaging students in sustainability. At its end, Professor Stephen Marston (Vice-Chancellor UoG) remarked on student sustainability journeys at UoG.

Session: Changing the game for students – institutional innovations
• Students Workbook at UEA (Professor Tim O’Riordan, University of East Anglia)
• Student Experience at TSD (Dr Carolyn Hayles, University of Wales Trinity St David)
• Student Initiatives at Plymouth (Professor Stephen Sterling, Plymouth University)
• Greener Gloucestershire & EfS (Rachel Purdon, Jenny Barnes & Meg Baker, UoG)

The day’s programme came to an end with a discussion group session on Graduates’ Future Horizons.

Gloucestershire to hold event on Student Experience with Education for Sustainability (EfS)

BIG-UoG-EfS-seminar-10Jun2015

The annual Education for Sustainability (EfS) event of the University of Gloucestershire (UoG) will be held at the University’s Park Campus on 10 June 2015.

This year’s event, titled ‘Raising the Stakes in the Student Experience with EfS’, is focusing on student experience as part of Festivals Fortnight.

At this event, the leaders of the LSFS projects will share their work in areas such as Accountancy, Fine Art, Business, Fashion, Product Design, Sports Placements, Tourism and Libraries.

Moreover, in an interactive panel discussion, guests from three other universities (Plymouth University, University of East Anglia and University of Wales Trinity St David) will join the UoG Student Union’s Greener Gloucestershire team to share new ideas and initiatives on engaging students in sustainability.

A report that spans 53 institutions in 33 European countries | ESD professional development in higher education

SML-UE4SD-Report-FULL

A recently published report, titled ‘State of the Art Report: Mapping opportunities for developing Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) competences in the UE4SD partner countries’, shows that ESD has earned recognition in higher education across Europe and a growing number of universities have formal commitments to ESD as part of corporate sustainability activities. Reflecting on the status of ESD professional development in higher education, the report also notes the variety of approaches in use, examples of innovative practice, and the need for clearer focus on professional competences in ESD.

This report, published in November 2014, is part of a three-year project entitled University Educators for Sustainable Development (UE4SD), funded by the European Commission under the Lifelong Learning Programme – Erasmus Academic Networks and led by the University of Gloucestershire.

UE4SD, the project

UE4SD is a partnership of higher education institutions (HEI), organisations, agencies and associations across Europe and beyond. This project’s 54 partners across 33 countries in Europe come from four regional hubs: The North region (coordinated by the University of Gloucestershire, UK), the West region (Leuphana University of Lüneburg, Germany), the South region (the Autonomous University of Madrid, Spain), and the East region (Charles University Prague, Czech Republic). Among the partners of this project are two UK universities – University of Gloucestershire and London South Bank University (LSBU). Moreover, activities of this project are closely associated with COPERNICUS Alliance – the European Network of Higher Education for Sustainable Development.

Exploring pathways for progressing sustainability innovation in higher education, UE4SD seeks to improve professional development opportunities for university educators in ESD. It strives to develop professional competences and academic leadership capabilities in ESD and to enable teaching staff to reorient curricula and prepare students for understanding and applying their professional and global responsibilities in sustainable development. UE4SD aims to establish a leading expert group in ESD competences in higher education in Europe and a platform for sharing the expertise of network partners with the aim of informing policy and practice.

The report

This 54-page report – authored by Marlene Mader, Gerd Michelsen, Clemens Mader and Simon Burandt (Leuphana University of Lüneburg, Germany); Daniella Tilbury and Alex Ryan (University of Gloucestershire, UK); Jana Dlouhá, Andrew Barton and Jiří Dlouhý (Charles Universty Prague, Czech Republic), and David Alba and Javier Benayas (Autonomous University of Madrid, Spain) – analyses the findings of four regional reports, which summarized the national mapping exercises conducted by 53 UE4SD partner institutions in 33 European countries.

This study identified existing policy developments and strategic commitments for ESD in higher education across the different countries, and collected the examples of best practice in supporting professional development in this area.

This report will inform the second and third phases of the project, which seek to develop a leading practice publication on professional development in ESD for university educators and an online platform of resources. These outputs will in turn support the establishment of an Academy for ESD in Higher Education.

Education for Sustainability (EfS) is in the process of enriching the curriculum and student learning experiences at the University of Gloucestershire, said Professor Daniella Tilbury (Dean and Director of Sustainability at the University of Gloucestershire) at an EfS workshop, titled ‘Turning tides in Education for Sustainability (EfS) across higher education,’ held at the university on 2 July 2014.

This annual event shared the experiences of EfS projects at the University of Gloucestershire (UoG) and EfS innovations in educational thinking and academic practice at several other UK universities.

The day began with a welcome and introduction to the day by Professor Tilbury, who briefly outlined EfS at UoG and its Learning for Sustainable Futures Scheme (LSFS).

Maureen McLaughlin (Dean of Quality and Standards, UoG) spoke on ‘Futures for EfS: Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) and institutional responses’. Having realised students’ concern for sustainable development, UK higher education sector bodies have responded accordingly. For example, in June 2014, the QAA published an ESD Guidance for higher education providers in the UK. Chapter B3 of the UK Quality Code for Higher Education (the Quality Code) on Learning and Teaching identifies education for sustainability (or ESD) as an educational theme that cuts across academic disciplines and sustainable development will become a one of the themes of QAA review of UK higher education institutions.

Before moving to the sessions, Professor Sharon Turnbull (Leadership Trust), chair of the event, outlined the focus of the day, i.e. EfS, Change and Organisational Cultures.

The workshop featured three sessions and a discussion group session:

  • Culture, community and curriculum – new pathways
  • Learning from our experiences – institutional development in EfS
  • Raising the stakes – improving student experiences
  • EfS futures – Student and sector influences (discussion group session)

Session 1: Culture, community and curriculum – new pathways:

Session 1 comprised four presentations:

  • Fashioning a new Curriculum: designing EfS into Fashion programmes
  • Using EfS through Online Learning in Philosophy of Religion
  • Designing Sustainable Futures: EfS and Product Design
  • Game-Changers: EfS, Learning and Sport Communities

Fashioning a new Curriculum: designing EfS into Fashion programmes | Nick Sargeant (School of Art & Design, UoG): Creating a programme-wide approach to EfS, this project aims to embed EfS approach into the design and development of the new Fashion Design curriculum in response to the industry’s need for skills and leadership in sustainability. It strives to ensure that EfS approaches inform the learning process at all levels, ranging from creative expression and design skills to self-direction and professional responsibilities.

Using EfS through Online Learning in Philosophy of Religion | Dr Roy Jackson (School of Humanities, UoG): Focusing on Islamic philosophy as part of the design process for a new Masters programme in Philosophy and Religious Thought, this project seeks to engage students with EfS to support learning processes associated with the endeavour towards more sustainable futures. It also explores ways in advancing EfS in flexible learning environments and in distance learning and also using digital technologies.

Designing Sustainable Futures: EfS and Product Design | Dr Michelle Williams (School of Computing and Technology): This project aims to embed EfS principles in the new BA/BSc Product Design courses to facilitate students’ development of sustainability competences, which would be reflected in specific skills and expertise and graduates’ professional responsibilities. It also strives for deeper understanding among students on how sustainability informs a range of aspects in design, including design thinking, human factors and responsible professional practice.

Game-Changers: EfS, Learning and Sport Communities (Two projects) | Ben Moreland and Dr Abbe Brady (School of Sport & Exercise – Presented by Dr Alex Ryan in the absence of both project leaders):

  • The first project: Drawing on the sustainability-related learning and skills of the university’s Sports Malawi outreach initiative, the project ‘Malawi and beyond: Transformative global learning in sports for development’ aims to transfer these insights and learning processes to the Sports Development curriculum using EfS approaches. This project, which gives students work experience in Malawi, is a unique example of bringing co-curricular learning into the formal curriculum.
  • The second project: With a view of meeting the growth in industry professional development needs around sustainability in sport, the project ‘Changing the game: Education and learning for sustainability in sport’ aims to build the capacity of the teaching staff in the Sports and Exercise department to enable them to respond to sustainability in the higher education curriculum, placements and outreach. It is also employing sustainability as a cross-cutting agenda that connects the different areas of work in the Department, including health and wellbeing, community building and social change, and global connectivity and local engagement.

Session 2: Learning from our experiences – institutional development in EfS

Session 2 comprised a Chat Show discussion on progress in embedding EfS in four higher education institutions:

  • The Futures Initiative (Dr Stephen Scoffham, Canterbury Christ Church University)
  • ESD strategies and programme development plans (Katharine Foot, Royal Agricultural University)
  • Institution-wide curriculum projects initiative (Katy Boom and Will Bowen-Jones, University of Worcester)
  • Learning for Sustainable Futures (Dr Alex Ryan and Professor Daniella Tilbury, University of Gloucestershire)

Note: For more information about these initiatives, please see the links below at the end of this write up (under ‘More…’)

Session 3: Raising the stakes – improving student experiences

Session 3 comprised three presentations:

  • Social Learning for EfS: the Open Voice initiative (Bruce Goodwin, Senior Chaplain, Student Services)
  • EfS Competencies Portfolio for Students (Richard Millican/Tim Morgan, Institute of Education & Public Services)
  • Student Voices for EfS in the Business School (Meg Baker, Green Fund Research Co-ordinator, Student Union)

Social Learning for EfS: the Open Voice initiative | Bruce Goodwin (Senior Chaplain, Student Services, UoG): With the ambition of creating new spaces at the university for informal and social learning among students, this project supports the creation of Open Voice, a ‘Public Square’ initiative that facilitates debates around issues of life, faith and meaning while connecting with sustainability values and concerns. This student-led project, which brings together students, the Chaplaincy and the sustainability team, is a unique attempt to bridge the faith and sustainability agendas in a higher education setting.

EfS Competencies Portfolio for Students | Richard Millican and Tim Morgan (Institute of Education and Public Services, UoG): Drawing on a UNECE (United Nations Economic Commission for Europe) European educator competences framework in EfS, this project aims to develop a portfolio for students in Education Studies to demonstrate and validate their development of EfS competences. It is one of the first attempts to use this competence framework to embed EfS in higher education programme level as well as a unique step of transferring the framework into a professional portfolio for students.

Student Voices for EfS in the Business School | Meg Baker (Green Fund Research Co-ordinator, Student Union, UoG): This project aims to strengthen the student voice in the development of EfS in the university’s curriculum with a specific focus on the renewal of the Business School and position of EfS in future academic strategy and curriculum development in Business subjects. It is an exploration of how students can influence the shaping and planning of their learning experiences.

The event ended with a session of discussion groups on ‘EfS futures – the role of students and sector bodies in the future of EfS in higher education,’ followed by a plenary discussion.
