big-ucl-isr-steinerlec

Achim Steiner (Director of the Oxford Martin School) will deliver UCL ISR Public Lecture titled ‘Lost in the Green Economy Transition: Environmental Imperatives vs. Economic Uncertainties’ at University College London (UCL) (Room B404 – LT2, Cruciform Building, Gower Street, London, WC1E 6BT) on 30 November 2016 (17:45 – 19:00).

The lecture will focus on a number of ‘trade-offs’ associated with transitioning to a green economy in the wake of the historic Paris Agreement and adoption of the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda and how these may be addressed in evolving pathways in the domains of policy, the economy and technology innovation.

Achim Steiner was appointed Director of the Oxford Martin School on 1 September 2016. Before that he served as United Nations Under-Secretary General and Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme UNEP (2006-2016).

This lecture is part of the series of public lectures hosted by the UCL Institute for Sustainable Resources (ISR).

Global Energy, Global Climate | UCL event with a French connection

BIG-UCL-GlobalEnergy

An event, titled ‘Global Energy, Global Climate’, will take place at University College London (UCL) on 20 October 2015 from 18:30 to 21:00.

This event, supported by UCL Grand Challenges programme, is hosted by UCL Energy Institute, UCL Institute for Sustainable Resources, UK Energy Research Centre (UKERC) and the Embassy of France in the UK under the auspices of the long-established relationship between the Embassy’s Science and Technology Department and UCL Grand Challenges. This is the first in a series of three events planned for the 2015-16 academic year.

The event will see the launch of the book Global Energy: Issues, Potentials, and Policy Implications, which is the outcome of UKERC’s second phase of work.

In this event chaired by The Guardian’s Environment Correspondent Fiona Harvey, a panel of internationally recognised speakers will review the global energy scene and the challenges posed by the need for secure, affordable and environmentally sustainable energy, and will discuss the energy and climate solutions in the context of the evidence laid out in the book.

The speakers are:
• Professor Jean-Charles Hourcade, Director of Research at the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS)
• Professor Jim Skea, RCUK (Research Councils UK) Energy Strategy Fellow and Professor of Sustainable Energy at Imperial College

UCL Grand Challenges celebration | How does Civilisation get to 22nd century without collapse? asks Professor Price

SML-UCLGC-postevent

How does Civilisation get to the 22nd century without collapse or catastrophic discontinuity? asked Professor David Price in his welcome address at the fifth anniversary celebration of UCL Grand Challenges (UCL GC) programme held on 13 October 2014.

UCL Grand Challenges is the mechanism that brings together the university’s researchers from different disciplines in order to address questions of global significance. For an overview, please visit:

UCL Grand Challenges | Global Health, Sustainable Cities, Intercultural Interaction and Human Wellbeing http://www.linkedin.com/today/post/article/20140911112647-101066234-ucl-grand-challenges-global-health-sustainable-cities-intercultural-interaction-and-human-wellbeing

Reflecting and building upon the personal and institutional experiences gained over the last five years, this celebratory evening defined the actions needed to strengthen, enhance and enable further cross-disciplinary engagement within and beyond the university, for the benefit of the wider society.

In his welcome Professor David Price (UCL Vice-Provost, Research), who leads the UCL GC programme, emphasised that a cross disciplinary approach is necessary to find solutions to the world’s complex problems because no single discipline is capable of solving these on their own.

After a short film on the GC programme, Dr Ian Scott (Principal Facilitator UCL GC) presented how the programme was developed to what it is today, and Professor Yvonne Rydin (Chair of Planning, Environment and Public Policy, UCL Bartlett School of Planning) and Professor Nick Tyler (Chadwick Chair of Civil Engineering, UCL Civil, Environmental and Geomatic Engineering) presented reflections on the programme. They all elaborated how the GC programme advances cross–disciplinary research across the institution.

Professor Michael Arthur (UCL President and Provost) chaired UCL Grand Challenges 2034, a discussion by a panel comprising:

  • Dr Tim Beasley-Murray (Director of UCL Global Citizenship Programme)
  • Dr Sarah Bell (UCL Civil, Environmental and Geomatic Engineering)
  • Professor Anthony Costello (Director of the UCL Institute for Global Health)
  • Professor Alan Penn (Dean of the UCL Bartlett Faculty of the Built Environment)
  • Professor Maria Wyke (UCL Greek and Latin)

Among other things, the panellists were asked to present their ‘manifesto’ for the future of Grand Challenges and this resulted in a variety of responses, including co-existence; cultural identity and conflict; women’s rights; development and voice; meeting basic needs; and disease and antibiotic resistance.

The evening came to a close with a drinks reception.

NEW BOOK: Imagining the Future City: London 2062

SML-London2062-bookcoverA new book, Imagining the Future City: London 2062, was launched at University College London (UCL) in November 2013.

The book, edited by Dr Sarah Bell (Senior Lecturer, Department of Civil, Environmental and Geomatic Engineering UCL) and Dr James Paskins (Co-ordinator for the Grand Challenge of Sustainable Cities and the London Agenda at UCL), aims to open discussion about the future of London.

This publication features new work that addresses the city’s future, including academic writing, opinion pieces and illustrations and also winning entries from the London 2062 competition for UCL students. The book comprises four sections:

  • Connections
  • Things
  • Power
  • Dreams

The introduction from Dr Sarah Bell, Dr James Paskins, Joanna Wilson and Jennifer Johnson (Future of London) sums up what the book is, as follows: ‘Imagining the Future City is not a blueprint, nor is it a prophecy. It is a provocation to continuing dialogue and a prompt for Londoners to consider what is at stake. London’s future cannot be predicted, foretold or decided in a book, however expert its authors. This book presents the visions and analysis of authors from a range of academic and professional disciplines, with the aim of opening up deliberation and debate about what London might be like in fifty years, and what that might mean for the choices we make now.’

This collaborative effort of forty contributors is based on UCL’s London 2062 project (2010-2012), which Professor David Price (Vice-Provost for Research at UCL) instigated as part of the Research Grand Challenge of Sustainable Cities, driven by his vision of bringing the breadth of institution’s urban research to bear on the future of London.

UCL symposium focuses on Sustainable Resources for Sustainable Cities

??????????????????????

As part of the BHP Billiton Sustainable Communities/UCL Grand Challenge Symposium Series, a symposium on Sustainable Resources for Sustainable Cities was held at University College London (UCL) on 5 and 6 November 2013.

Hosted by the UCL Grand Challenge for Sustainable Cities and the UCL Institute for Sustainable Resources (UCL ISR), the two-day event specifically looked to address the challenges around provision of resources for growing urban populations, with regard to the physical built environment, infrastructure, transport and water.

The programme of Day 1 on ‘Urban metabolism, feeding the city,’ comprised three sessions – Urban Challenges, Resource supply and Resource consumption – and a keynote address by Professor Herbert Girardet, co-founder of the World Future Council (WFC) on ‘Urban Metabolism’.

On Day 2 on ‘Research into action’, following an introduction by Professor Raimund Bleischwitz (BHP Billiton Chair in Sustainable Global Resources, UCL ISR), Dr Michele Acuto (Senior Lecturer in Global Networks and Diplomacy, UCL) chaired a panel discussion on Cities in Transition. The panel comprised:
