The annual conference of The Environmental Association for Universities and Colleges (EAUC) will take place at Keele University from 19 to 21 June 2018.

Inspired by UN Sustainable Development Goal No 17 (i.e. Partnerships), this year’s conference theme, ‘Collaborations for Change: Global Goals for Tomorrow’s Education, Today’, emphasises the critical role that academics, researchers, students, sustainability leaders and support staff in universities and colleges must play together in the endeavour of achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) worldwide.

“The SDGs are the world’s new to-do list and this conference will inspire and empower universities and colleges to take the step-change needed,” says Iain Patton (CEO, The EAUC), “Our students and their learning are instrumental in delivering the Global Goals and shaping all our futures. Students have the commitment and energy, so it’s up to us in the lecture room and on the campus to ensure they leave our institutions with the knowledge and skills they need to become effective agents of global understanding and local action.”

Programme and delegates

Repositioning sustainability as a foundation to build positive new cross-sector collaborations for change, this event will embrace all areas of campus life, from the post-16 education sector. Delegates include those responsible for sustainability leadership, environmental management, governance, estates and facilities, finance and procurement as well as teachers, lecturers, curriculum designers, post-graduate researchers and students.

BIG-SRG-panel-28June18-preEvent

NOTE: Text and graphics by Asitha Jayawardena (http://uk.linkedin.com/in/asithaj) as part of his Sustainable University One-stop Shop Experiment (http://www.sustainableuni.kk5.org/).

London South Bank University’s Sustainability Research Group of the Centre for Social Justice and Global Responsibility will host a panel discussion on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at the university (Room DC12/13 in the Clarence Centre) on Thursday 28 June 2018 from 5 to 6.30pm.

This event is free to attend but prior booking is required. EventBrite page:

https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/the-sustainable-development-goals-from-global-to-local-tickets-46754916213

Titled ‘The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): from Global to Local’, this insightful discussion on the role of the SDGS in supporting and promoting a more sustainable world feature three distinguished speakers:

Hilary Macleod (Environmental educator and consultant from Queensland, Australia): Has worked with a number of key global agencies including UNESCO.

Dr Katherine Eames (Senior Sustainability Project Officer at the Greater London Authority): Currently co-ordinates the pan-London Mayor’s Entrepreneur competition, which supports London’s students to come up with innovative solutions for London to reduce carbon emissions.

Dr Paul Vare (Senior Lecturer, Research Development, School of Education, University of Gloucestershire): Has extensive international experience in the field of sustainability and his research and teaching specialism is the area of education and sustainable development.

The discussion will be followed by a reception for networking.

Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

The 17 SDGs that the 193 member states of the UN signed up to in 2015 are ambitious in scope and, when taken together, they represent a real opportunity to develop a global strategy for localities to fight poverty and global inequality, and to tackle climate change and protect the environment.

LSBU Sustainability Research Group

Launched in November 2017 and hosted by LSBU School of Law and Social Sciences, the Sustainability Research Group on Policy, Practice and Pedagogy aims to achieve sustainability through research, education and action.

The group develops and promotes research and action on sustainability as a new and emerging interdisciplinary area, drawing from the social sciences as well as other disciplinary landscapes in order to address the complex, real-world wicked problems of today, such as climate change,  global inequality, forced migration, biodiversity loss, social and environmental justice.

Framed within the context of UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and UNESCO’s Global Action Plan (GAP), the group’s work is linked to the Centre for Social Justice and Global Responsibility at LSBU’s School of Law and Social Sciences.

Building on the work of the London Regional Centre of Expertise (RCE) on Education for Sustainability (EfS), which is hosted at LSBU, the group also links with the wider global RCE network of the UN University and UNESCO networks.

A talk by civil engineer Brittany Harris, titled The role of engineers in achieving global sustainable development – what can we do?, will take place at the Institution of Civil Engineers (One Great George Street, London, SW1P 3AA) at 6pm on 10 April 2018.

Organised by the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), the talk will be part of the joint meeting of Civil Engineers’ Club and ICE London Graduates and Students Network.

Brittany is Co-founder and Director of Qualis Flow, a company using IoT technology to facilitate management of environmental risk on construction sites. Before this, she worked for BuroHappold as a Civil Engineer in Water and Environment in Bath. She has a Master of Engineering (MEng) degree in Civil Engineering from Bristol University. In 2016-2017 she was NCE (New Civil Engineer) Graduate of the Year and one of the eight ICE Future Leaders (formerly President’s Apprentice).

In her talk, Brittany will explore the role that engineers could and should play in ensuring the sustainability of our planet and what they could do differently, focusing on the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that the member countries of the United Nations adopted in 2015 with a view of ending poverty, protecting the plant and ensuring prosperity for all.

The talk will follow the AGM of Commonwealth Engineers’ Council (CEC), a professional body for all engineers of the Commonwealth. It represents 45 engineering institutions in 44 countries across five continents with the aim of advancement of the science, art and practice of engineering for the benefit of humankind. The ICE serves as the Secretariat for the CEC and current CEC President is ICE Past-president Prof Paul Jowitt.

Established two centuries ago, The Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) has over 90,000 members in more than 150 countries.

LSBU SDGs seminar & book launch | America has a latent potential to lead the world on Climate Change ~ Dr Atkinson

NOTE: Text and photographs by Asitha Jayawardena (http://uk.linkedin.com/in/asithaj) as part of his Sustainable University One-stop Shop Experiment (http://www.sustainableuni.kk5.org/).

There still exists a latent potential for America to act as a world leader on Climate Change, said Dr Hugh Atkinson, in his double event of a seminar and a book launch at London South Bank University (LSBU) on 8 February 2018.

Dr Hugh Atkinson

The seminar was on The USA and the Sustainable Development Goals, with a focus on challenges and opportunities. It ended with three questions:

  • Is it possible to do a new kind of economics?
  • Is sustainable economic growth a contradiction in terms?
  • Is population growth the elephant in the room?

The book launch unveiled Dr Atkinson’s latest book, The Politics of Climate Change under President Obama. Professor Patrick Bailey (Deputy Vice Chancellor and Chair of the Sustainability Steering Group LSBU) delivered the welcome speech.

Professor Patrick Bailey

Talking about his book, Dr Atkinson placed the evolution of US policy within broader debates on the politics of climate change in the USA. He was optimistic, stating that there still exists a latent potential for America to act as a world leader on this issue.

Dr Hugh Atkinson is Senior Lecturer in Politics and Public Policy at LSBU, a tutor on the Education for Sustainability (EfS) programme and a Management Group member of the London RCE (Regional Centre of Expertise) on ESD (Education for Sustainable Development), which is based at LSBU.

The second meeting of the LSBU research group ‘SUSTAINABILITY: Policy, Practice and Pedagogy’ was held before this double event.

SDGs & post-16 Education | EAUC launches SDG Accord at the World Congress on Environmental Education

BIG-SDGaccord

By Asitha Jayawardena (https://www.linkedin.com/today/author/asithaj) as part of his Sustainable University One-stop Shop Experiment (http://www.sustainableuni.kk5.org/).

The SDG Accord, a pioneering global initiative to embed Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) across post-16 education, was launched on 9 September 2017 at the 9th World Congress on Environmental Education (WEEC) in Vancouver, Canada.

Facilitated by the Environmental Association for Universities and Colleges (EAUC), the SDG Accord is the collective response of the higher and further education sectors’ collective response to the SDGs, reflecting education key role in moulding a new generation that can and will strike a balance between people, planet and prosperity.

The Accord aims to inspire, celebrate and advance the embedding of the SD goals in post-16 institutions through education, research, leadership, operations, administration and engagement activities.

It will also commit institutions to share the learning they accrue on the topic with one other nationally and internationally and to annually report on their progress. A sector overview of progress will then be presented annually at UN High Level Political Forum’s global progress review.

“The premise of the Goals is simple: there must be economic, social and environmental balance. Delivery has never been straightforward – but this SDG Accord will now help pave the way for holistic change,” says Iain Patton, Chief Executive of the EAUC. “Institutions that sign up to the accord will embed the goals in every department and collaborate across cities, regions, countries and continents. This is the beginning of a total global transformation.”

“The Sustainable Development Goals offer a clear and common agenda for humanity and places the onus on higher- and further education ecosystems to respond with urgency and action to meet and exceed the goals,” says John North, Managing Director at Globally Responsible Leadership Initiative. “The SDG Accord is an important awareness raising and activation platform for catalysing global responsibility in living, learning and leading.”

The SDG Accord has already been endorsed by 30 supporting organisations from around the world, including:

  • World Environmental Education Congress (WEEC) Network
  • Globally Responsible Leadership Initiative
  • Society for the Environment, UK
  • Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE), US
