Green Economy Transition | Oxford Martin School’s Director to deliver UCL ISR public lecture on 30 November

big-ucl-isr-steinerlec

Achim Steiner (Director of the Oxford Martin School) will deliver UCL ISR Public Lecture titled ‘Lost in the Green Economy Transition: Environmental Imperatives vs. Economic Uncertainties’ at University College London (UCL) (Room B404 – LT2, Cruciform Building, Gower Street, London, WC1E 6BT) on 30 November 2016 (17:45 – 19:00).

The lecture will focus on a number of ‘trade-offs’ associated with transitioning to a green economy in the wake of the historic Paris Agreement and adoption of the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda and how these may be addressed in evolving pathways in the domains of policy, the economy and technology innovation.

Achim Steiner was appointed Director of the Oxford Martin School on 1 September 2016. Before that he served as United Nations Under-Secretary General and Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme UNEP (2006-2016).

This lecture is part of the series of public lectures hosted by the UCL Institute for Sustainable Resources (ISR).

Surrey to host £6m int’l research centre | Centre for the Understanding of Sustainable Prosperity (CUSP)

BIG-CUSP-FULL

The University of Surrey has received a £6m research grant from the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) to establish a multi-disciplinary international research centre, called ‘The Centre for the Understanding of Sustainable Prosperity’ (CUSP). Among this Centre’s other academic partners are five UK universities (Anglia Ruskin, Keele, Goldsmiths College London, Leeds and Middlesex) and two universities from Canada (York) and New Zealand (Canterbury).

Led by Professor Tim Jackson and working in collaboration with a variety of academic and non-academic partners, CUSP will launch a five-year multidisciplinary research programme in January 2016.

Vision, aim and the programme

CUSP will aim to explore the complex relationship between prosperity (our aspirations for the good life) and sustainability (the social and environmental constraints of a finite planet). As Professor Jackson puts it, “Our guiding vision for sustainable prosperity is one in which people everywhere have the capability to flourish as human beings – within the ‘safe operating space’ of a finite planet. CUSP’s work will be to elaborate that vision, test its viability and explore its social and economic implications.”

Thus, CUSP will explore not just the economic aspects of sustainable prosperity, but also its social, political and philosophical dimensions. It will address the implications of sustainable prosperity at the level of households and firms and will explore sector-level and macro-economic implications of different pathways to prosperity. It will pay particular attention to the pragmatic steps that enterprise, government and civil society should take in order to achieve a sustainable prosperity.

Themes

The CUSP work programme comprises five themes (‘MAPSS’ framework):
• Theme M explores the moral framing and contested meanings of prosperity itself.
• Theme A explores the role of the arts and of culture in our society
• Theme P addresses the politics of sustainable prosperity and explores the institutional shifts that will be needed to achieve it.
• Theme S1 explores the social and psychological dimensions of prosperity.
• Theme S2 examines the complex dynamics of social and economic systems on which sustainable prosperity depends.

Partners

Spanning numerous academic disciplines, the Centre will take the form of an international network, drawing together expert partners from academic and non-academic institutions as co-producers of the work programme.

The academic partners include:
UK:
University of Surrey (Prof Tim Jackson, Dr Kate Burningham, Ian Christie, Dr Angela Druckman, Dr Birgitta Gatersleben)
Anglia Ruskin University (Dr Aled Jones)
Keele University (Prof Andy Dobson)
Goldsmiths College London (Dr Will Davies)
University of Leeds (Prof Kate Oakley)
Middlesex University (Prof Fergus Lyon)
Canada: York University (Prof Peter Victor)
New Zealand: University of Canterbury (Prof Bronwyn Hayward)

Among CUSP’s non-academic partners are the Aldersgate Group and the UN Environment Programme (UNEP). The Aldersgate Group, an alliance of leaders from business, politics and society that drives action for a sustainable economy, will formally be co-investigators on the project, establishing a vital link to industry and policy. As part of Theme S1, CUSP will engage with UNEP in a major study of young people’s lifestyles across the world. Other partnerships include a wide range of business and cultural organisations.

This collaboration will be widened further through an international network of CUSP Fellows hailing from a variety of academic and non-academic institutions.

Engagement

As part of its exploration of practical actions and proposition of supportive policies, CUSP will engage with business, government and civil society.

In order to engage a wide-range of stakeholders in debate and foster practical innovations in pursuit of sustainable prosperity, the Centre will develop an international Sustainable Prosperity Dialogue, to be chaired by Dr Rowan Williams, former Archbishop of Canterbury and Master of Magdalene College, Cambridge.

House of Commons launch: UK’s Rio+20 Manifesto to strengthen education’s role in sustainable development

SML-Rio+20-manifestoA Manifesto for Dialogue, Collaboration and Action post Rio+20, UK’s Rio+20 Manifesto to strengthen education’s role in sustainable development, will be launched at the House of Commons London on 17 December 2013 (11:00-13:00). This manifesto is facilitated by the Environmental Association for Universities and Colleges (EAUC).

This is a free event; however, prior registration is required (For registration, the link to the relevant EAUC webpage could be found below this news post).

Hosted by Joan Walley MP (Chair of the Environmental Audit Select Committee), this event will include an introduction to the Manifesto by Harriet Sjerps-Jones (EAUC and University of Exeter); a Roundtable Session led by Ann Finlayson (Chief Executive, Sustainability and Environmental Education SEEd and former Commissioner, Sustainable Development Commission) and Iain Patton (Chief Executive, EAUC); and Witness Accounts – among the confirmed witnesses are Caroline Lucas MP, Steve Egan (Higher Education Funding Council for England HEFCE), Dom Anderson (National Union of Students NUS), university students, youth representatives and school children.

The intergovernmental agreements that came out of Rio+20 United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD) (The Future We Want) included commitments to quality education, to improve quality of life, to Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) and to embark on a process towards Sustainable Development Goals. The Conference also emphasised ESD’s key role in achieving a sustainable future.

UK’s Rio+20 Manifesto, the result of a UK-wide consultation from November 2012 to May 2013 in response to The Future We Want, calls on Governments (UK government and the devolved governments of Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales), education providers, NGOs and civil society in the UK to work more closely together to strengthen the role of education as an enabler of sustainable development.

The manifesto also calls for supporting mechanisms that governments and civil society should put in place to enable and strengthen UK delivery of the educational commitments agreed in The Future We Want:

Government

  • Better coordination of efforts and collaboration between governments and across government departments on formal and informal learning for sustainable development
  • Improvement of dialogue between the education sector, civil society and government departments
  • Enabling education sectors to develop an appropriate curriculum to meet current and future sustainability challenges through a realignment of funding with The Future We Want in mind

Formal learning

  • Curriculum change (e.g. sustainability in curricula, interdisciplinary learning opportunities)
  • Institutional change (e.g. education institutions providing leadership in sustainable development and working closely with local communities)

Informal learning

  • Improved collaboration between NGOs and formal education institutions

Economy-ESD connection

  • Improved collaboration among state, charity, business and education sectors to ensure that the young are better prepared for the opportunities and challenges of a green and fair economy
