Education for Sustainability (EfS) | Pioneering LSBU course celebrates 21st anniversary

Is the education that we are providing adequate to face the challenges that we are facing today? asked Professor Stephen Sterling (Professor of Sustainability Education at the Centre for Sustainable Futures, Plymouth University) in his keynote speech at the 21st anniversary celebratory conference of the EfS programme at London South Bank University (LSBU) held at LSBU on 13 January 2017.

 

Titled ‘Celebrating 21 Years of EfS: Moving forward in an age of global uncertainty’, the event brought together academics, students, alumni and practitioners, who collectively reflected on the impact of EfS and looked forward to future developments in this important field of education.

 

The programme featured a keynote, talks, panel discussions, workshops, stories from current students and alumni of the course, a poster exhibition and a celebratory reception.

Welcome

 

Welcoming the participants, Professor Patrick Bailey (Deputy Vice Chancellor LSBU) highlighted that sustainability is so complex that no single area of expertise can solve the wicked problems associated with it, emphasising the need for an interdisciplinary approach.

 

He said that it is social justice that needs to be at the heart of sustainability, so that everything else would follow, even environmental protection.

 

He revealed that he doesn’t believe in climate change because it is not a religion and that, like himself, we all should become climate change critics. He said that there is 98% certainty that climate change is happening and 95% certainty that it is human-driven and warned that the consequences of not taking this clear evidence into account would be very serious.

 

He congratulated the outgoing course director, Professor Ros Wade, who had been at the helm of the course for the last 21 years from the very beginning.

 

Introduction

 

Dr Jaya Gajparia, the new director of the EfS programme, gave an overview of the course.

 

She said that the EfS course, which offers postgraduate courses from Continued Professional Development (CPD) to Masters level with a range of flexible study modes, including distance learning, spans the theory and practice of EfS, enabling students to explore and expand the role that EfS can play in educational, social, political and economic change.

 

She also said that the course, which is designed for anyone interested in paving the way for a more sustainable world by way of understanding, educating or promoting sustainability, comprises six modules, with case studies and readings from a range of global regions; they are designed to be applicable to any type of educational or country context.

 

Moreover, she talked about the roots of the course, which lie the 1992 UN Earth Summit in Rio, Brazil, where a commitment was made to integrate environmental and development concerns in the emerging concept of sustainability while emphasising the importance of education’s role in building a sustainable world. In response to this, she said, a group of development and environmental organisations – with the financial contributions from WWF-UK, Oxfam and the EU – got together with LSBU and the eventual result was this EfS programme.

 

Finally, she observed that, over the last 21 years, the world’s first ever Masters programme of this kind has continued to grow steadily as a dynamic interface between theory and practice in EfS, with students and alumni from all continents – except Antarctica!

The panels discussion was on ‘Reflections on the past, planning for the future.’

 

The panel, chaired by Professor Stephen Sterling (Plymouth University), comprised Professor Ros Wade (LSBU), Dr Paul Vare (University of Gloucestershire), Betty Okot (Alumni from Uganda/ Keele University), Safia Minney (People Tree) and Professor Craig Barker (LSBU). The panellists answered the chair’s questions and then, in the end, questions from the audience.

 

Professor Ros Wade, outgoing course director, observed that this EfS course has been a collaboration from the very beginning – between environmental and development educators, between academia and NGOs and so on.

 

She said that EfS not being a fixed discipline or field, the course has been developed in line with solving real world problems, based mainly on practice, enabling students to explore and expand the role of EfS in their own personal and professional journeys.

 

To her, transformatory aspect is key to the course although which brings in tensions, such as allowing for transformation, emergence, openness and originality vs. learning outcomes.

 

She revealed that it was people who made the course a resounding success, especially the students.

 

She also mentioned Journeys around Education for Sustainability, the book that the course published in 2008 from the work of the course participants and directors.

 

Betty Okot (Keele University), an alumna from Uganda, talked about how the EfS course made her a confident agent of change, elaborating on her work in making positive change in community policing in Uganda.

 

Dr Paul Vare (University of Gloucestershire) emphasised that the economic goal is too narrow for education and that critical thinking should play a key role of education.

 

Safia Minney (founder of People Tree) suggested that more pressure should be exerted on governments and corporations to battle modern slavery and that the movie ‘True Cost’ should be shown to teachers.

 

Professor Craig Barker (Dean, School of Law and Social Sciences, LSBU) said that many countries takes responsibility seriously but international law is constrained by political will.

 

Course impact | Stories from students and alumni

The session on the impact of the course was chaired by Dr Glenn Strachan (LSBU), who himself was a student on the course and then a co-director.

 

Students and alumni from Lesotho, Rwanda, UK and Cameroon (on Skype) shared their stories. The course has helped them in different ways, including:

  • Enhancing thinking and practice
  • To become what one wanted to be (now this student wants help others to become what they want to be)
  • To look deeply into the alternatives to the mainstream
  • To effect personal change for good in their own life and space
  • To become confident and effective agents of change

James Whittingham (Sustainability Manager at LSBU) outlined the university’s 3C-framework that drives sustainability change by addressing both hearts and minds of the LSBU community; the framework comprises campus, curriculum and community.

‘Whole Earth?’ exhibition, launched in autumn 2015 at the Eden Project, is hosted by universities and schools in the UK and Scandinavia. It is a partnership between Hard Rain Project, the National Union of Students (NUS) and the Environmental the Association of Universities and Colleges (EAUC).

 

UK Commonwealth Scholarship Commission’s contribution to sustainable development

Two representatives from the UK Commonwealth Scholarship Commission, which funds the African Scholarship programme of the course, outlined its contribution to sustainable development and empowerment through its scholarship scheme.

 

The RCE movement and Education for Sustainability (EfS)

Professor Ros Wade (Chair, London Regional Centre of Expertise RCE in Education for Sustainable Development ESD) revealed how the existence of the course at LSBU was instrumental in the development of LSBU as the host of the RCE London, which is part of the UN University’s global RCE network. She drew attention to the European RCE meeting 2016 that RCE London and LSBU hosted in June last year.

 

Keynote | Future challenges for EfS

What’s wrong with education today? Is the education that we are providing adequate to face the challenges that we are facing today? asked Professor Stephen Sterling, delivering the keynote on the future challenges for EfS.

 

Today, conventional knowledge is not adequate, he observed, emphasising that extraordinary times require extraordinary responses. He viewed the birth of this course as an example of such an extraordinary response from environmental and development education communities.

 

Good education should enable us to question assumptions, including our own, as this course encourages its students to do so, he said.

 

Future challenges for EfS are numerous, he said, taking tension as an example, between fragmentation and integration. Other challenges that he had mentioned include staying within fixed boundaries, issues related to labels and identities and obtaining better co-evaluation with society.

 

Although much more needs to be done, what EfS/ ESD (Education for Sustainable Development) has achieved in the last couple of decades is phenomenal, he observed. For instance, he said, in the 1990s EfS/ ESD was almost non-existent but today it enjoys global influence at the UN level.

Researching the way for a Sustainable Prosperity | Surrey-led CUSP Centre begins journey

January 2016 saw two great walks by three Tim’s. The first is the well-known space walk by two astronauts Tim Peake and Tim Kopra, which lasted for several hours. The second walk, more down-to-earth though not so well-known, was launched by a group led by Professor Tim Jackson and will last for a couple of years.

 

The Centre for the Understanding of Sustainable Prosperity (CUSP), a multi-disciplinary centre led by The University of Surrey and funded by The Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), launched in January 2016 its journey of researching the way for a sustainable prosperity. Its overall aim is to explore the economic, ecological, social and governance dimensions of sustainable prosperity and to make concrete recommendations to government, business and civil society in pursuit of it.

 

Vision

 

CUSP’s guiding vision for sustainable prosperity is one in which people everywhere have the capability to flourish as human beings – within the ecological and resource constraints of a finite planet. Its work will explore not just the economic aspects of this challenge, but also its social, political and philosophical dimensions, paying particular attention to the pragmatic steps that need to be taken by enterprise, government and civil society in order to achieve a sustainable prosperity.

 

Work programme

 

The CUSP work programme is organised around five core themes, MAPSS:

  • Meaning and moral framings of the good life;
  • the role of the Arts and culture in developing visions of prosperity;
  • Political and organisational dimensions of sustainable prosperity;
  • Social and psychological understandings of the good life;
  • Systems analysis to explore narratives of sustainable prosperity.

 

The MAPSS themes are drawn together through three cross-cutting projects:

  • A unique cross-theme case study to develop An Economy That Works.
  • A collaboration on sustainable finance with a coalition of thought leaders including the Aldersgate Group.
  • A new Sustainable Prosperity Dialogue: a public engagement process which reaches out to a wide, international participation from research, policy, business and civil society.

 

Partners and the team

 

The CUSP takes the form of a rich international network, drawing together expert partners from academic and non-academic institutions as co-producers of the work programme. Its research programme is coordinated from the University of Surrey under the direction of Professor Tim Jackson.

 

CUSP’s academic partners include: University of Surrey, Anglia Ruskin University, Keele University, Goldsmiths College London, University of Leeds, Middlesex University, York University (Canada), University of Canterbury (Christchurch, New Zealand). It has also established a vital link to industry and policy by including the Aldersgate Group and the World Future Council. The former is an alliance of leaders from business, politics and society that drives action for a sustainable economy; the latter is an NGO working closely with business leaders to envision An Economy That Works.

Universities have an obligation to empower students to deal with climate change, says Porritt at LSBU

BIG-PorrittAtLSBU-posteventUniversities have a binding, moral obligation to ensure that their graduates not only understand the dynamics of climate change but also are capable of dealing with its challenges, said eminent environmentalist and writer Jonathon Porritt CBE at an event on 13 October 2015 hosted by London South Bank University (LSBU).

The event, titled ‘Higher Education No Longer Needs to Protect the Environment’, started with an introduction by Professor Patrick Bailey, Deputy Vice Chancellor LSBU.

Jonathon Porritt started with a spiritual tone, referring to recent Pope Francis statement on the importance of nature. Before moving to sustainability in higher education, he talked about a range of environmental and sustainability issues in the wider world.

His commentary was followed by a Q&A session, run by Professor Bailey and Andrea Smith, Ethical and Environmental Officer of the student union. The evening of discussion came to an end with a networking session with refreshments.

Jonathon Porritt is Co-Founder of Forum for the Future, Chancellor of Keele University, former Chairman of the UK Sustainable Development Commission and former Director of Friends of the Earth.

Before joining LSBU as Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor Patrick Bailey was Pro Vice Chancellor Environment and Sustainability at Keele University and received the Leadership Award in Green Gown Awards 2014.

 

We should get students excited about green innovation, says Jonathon Porritt

Over the last several decades, the environment agenda has moved from a minority fringe to a majority viewpoint. However, what we can see today is all key global environmental indicators going in the wrong direction. Moreover, climate change, which is the most formidable challenge, overshadows other critical environmental issues, such as air pollution and ocean acidification.

A reason for our failure in the environmental front is how we see nature. Nature has intrinsic rights regardless of its value to human beings but we continue to look at it through a utilitarian lens.

We in the West don’t usually ask deep, philosophical questions about nature but non-western cultures, particularly indigenous communities, have developed a deeper understanding of the human-nature relationship over generations. For example, drawing from his cultural thought, Bolivian president has called for an International Court of Climate Justice and Mother Earth in the run up to the Conference of Parties (COP21) in Paris later this year.

Another reason for our failure is that no one in the UK knows how to do politics without economic growth; even Green Party is struggling here.

However, there are rays of hope, at least outside the UK. For instance, we can see an incredible surge of renewable innovation around the world, especially in Africa, South America, the Middle East and South Asia. This renewable energy revolution is unstoppable although unfortunately Britain seems to be heading backwards.

Moreover, we can be somewhat optimistic about COP21 Paris, particularly because two big players – the US and China – are stitching things up for good.

Turning to sustainability in higher education, universities have a binding, moral obligation to ensure that their graduates understand climate change and that they are capable of dealing with its challenges.

How are UK universities doing? Most are doing well in Estates and in their respective local communities. However, their performance is not equally satisfactory in their core business, i.e. Teaching and Research.

One reason is that universities are odd organisms. In a company, when CEO embraces sustainability, he or she can use their influence to get all aboard. In a university, however, although the vice chancellor looks equivalent to the CEO in a company, he or she would not be able to use the normal levers to drive the sustainability agenda in their institution. In universities, the command and control approach simply would not work and innovation is the way forward.

What can universities do? There are many opportunities to engage the university community with sustainability, particularly students. For instance, induction can be used to engage the news students with the environment agenda. Another is getting students excited about green innovation.

However, universities should first act as good examples. That’s why divestment (i.e. getting investment out of fossil fuels) is so important. Stepping beyond that, as the National Union of Students (NUS) advocates, what should follow divestment is socially responsible investment in, say renewable energy. Here, a wonderful motivator for universities is RE100, which is a global initiative that engages, supports and showcases influential companies committed to using 100% renewable power. In short, divest from bad stuff and invest in good stuff.

 

Sustainability can be built into any subject, says Professor Bailey

Having started at LSBU last year, I am initially engaged in somewhat ‘superficial’ projects, still signposting the way. Those who come to our university should get a sense that we are taking care of what is around us.

On making a university more sustainable, my advice is, start doing things that are relevant to different parts of the university instead of going for one big drive for making the university more sustainable. Three to four projects a year would be good.

Embedding sustainability in the curriculum is much more challenging but is possible because sustainability can be built into any subject. However, it is a long term project.

A university is a community, mainly comprising students and staff. So our students are not our customers. Finding the right ways to engage the student body with sustainability is critical for making a university more sustainable.

LSBU to host Jonathon Porritt lecture | ‘Higher Education No Longer Needs to Protect the Environment’ | #PorrittAtLSBU

BIG-Porritt-event-NEWA public lecture titled ‘Higher Education No Longer Needs to Protect the Environment’ by internationally-renowned environmentalist Jonathon Porritt CBE will take place at London South Bank University (LSBU) on 13 October 2015 from 17:15 to 19:30.

At this event hosted by LSBU, Jonathon Porritt will discuss the future of sustainability in higher education, and what it means to the higher education community. The lecture will be followed by a question time and a networking session with refreshments.

Commenting on the LSBU website, Deputy Vice-Chancellor Professor Pat Bailey, who is a career-long advocate of sustainability and environmental change in Higher Education, said: “The University sector is standing at a crossroads with regard to our sustainability commitments, and to have such an eminent environmentalist as Jonathon Porritt explain the ramifications of the path we take next promises to be an enlightening and potentially controversial evening of discussion.”

The event is open to all and free to attend but prior registration is required.

Jonathon Porritt is Co-Founder of Forum for the Future, former Chairman of the UK Sustainable Development Commission and Chancellor of Keele University.

Surrey to host £6m int’l research centre | Centre for the Understanding of Sustainable Prosperity (CUSP)

The University of Surrey has received a £6m research grant from the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) to establish a multi-disciplinary international research centre, called ‘The Centre for the Understanding of Sustainable Prosperity’ (CUSP). Among this Centre’s other academic partners are five UK universities (Anglia Ruskin, Keele, Goldsmiths College London, Leeds and Middlesex) and two universities from Canada (York) and New Zealand (Canterbury).

Led by Professor Tim Jackson and working in collaboration with a variety of academic and non-academic partners, CUSP will launch a five-year multidisciplinary research programme in January 2016.

Vision, aim and the programme

CUSP will aim to explore the complex relationship between prosperity (our aspirations for the good life) and sustainability (the social and environmental constraints of a finite planet). As Professor Jackson puts it, “Our guiding vision for sustainable prosperity is one in which people everywhere have the capability to flourish as human beings – within the ‘safe operating space’ of a finite planet. CUSP’s work will be to elaborate that vision, test its viability and explore its social and economic implications.”

Thus, CUSP will explore not just the economic aspects of sustainable prosperity, but also its social, political and philosophical dimensions. It will address the implications of sustainable prosperity at the level of households and firms and will explore sector-level and macro-economic implications of different pathways to prosperity. It will pay particular attention to the pragmatic steps that enterprise, government and civil society should take in order to achieve a sustainable prosperity.

Themes

The CUSP work programme comprises five themes (‘MAPSS’ framework):
• Theme M explores the moral framing and contested meanings of prosperity itself.
• Theme A explores the role of the arts and of culture in our society
• Theme P addresses the politics of sustainable prosperity and explores the institutional shifts that will be needed to achieve it.
• Theme S1 explores the social and psychological dimensions of prosperity.
• Theme S2 examines the complex dynamics of social and economic systems on which sustainable prosperity depends.

Partners

Spanning numerous academic disciplines, the Centre will take the form of an international network, drawing together expert partners from academic and non-academic institutions as co-producers of the work programme.

As part of Theme S1, CUSP will engage with UNEP in a major study of young people’s lifestyles across the world. Other partnerships include a wide range of business and cultural organisations.

This collaboration will be widened further through an international network of CUSP Fellows hailing from a variety of academic and non-academic institutions.

Engagement

As part of its exploration of practical actions and proposition of supportive policies, CUSP will engage with business, government and civil society.

In order to engage a wide-range of stakeholders in debate and foster practical innovations in pursuit of sustainable prosperity, the Centre will develop an international Sustainable Prosperity Dialogue, to be chaired by Dr Rowan Williams, former Archbishop of Canterbury and Master of Magdalene College, Cambridge.

The HEA-Keele workshop | Sustainability culture by a thousand cuts: an integrated whole institution approach to greening your academy

SML-HEA-KeeleA workshop, titled ‘Sustainability culture by a thousand cuts: an integrated whole institution approach to greening your academy,’ will take place at Keele University on 21 May 2014.

 

Hosted as part of the Workshop and Seminar Series 2013/2014 of the Higher Education Academy (HEA), the event will explore an innovative approach to embedding sustainability into the culture of a university, making use of multiple ‘entry points’ to integrate sustainability into all aspects of an institution’s operations. It will comprise three main sessions:

  • Integrating Campus, Curriculum, Community and the Student Experience
  • Leadership for Sustainability, the Formal Curriculum and the Role of the Students’ Union
  • Curriculum Case Studies

 

Following an introduction by an HEA representative, the workshop will ‘move out’ into its morning session, ‘Integrating Campus, Curriculum, Community and the Student Experience.’ This session will mainly explore sustainability education in practice and student sustainability projects across the campus as well as the interconnectedness of sustainability at the university, particularly focusing on how the campus acts as a catalyst for the sustainability agenda. The delegates will explore how the Keele campus is used for both informal and formal sustainability education for staff and students, taking a close look at a number of initiatives, including Keele Sustainability Hub, Keele walled garden allotments and the Student Eats project and The Sustainable Student House project. The session will be delivered by Dr Sharon George (Keele Sustainability Hub Manager), Emmanuel Blondel (Think: Green Student Society President), Dr Sarah Taylor (Lecturer in Ecology), Dr Zoe Robinson (Director of Education for Sustainability) and Sustainability Project Officers Bekki Laycock, Sophie Bessant, Philippa Calver and Giulia Mininni.

 

The second session ‘Leadership for Sustainability, the Formal Curriculum and the Role of the Students’ Union,’ in the afternoon, will cover three areas: (1) issues of leadership and management of the sustainability agenda, including the development and effectiveness of different leadership roles, and different models of staffing and resourcing, (2) strategies and opportunities that arise around the formal curriculum, including the adoption of different pedagogies, and different scale strategies from individual assessments to whole programme design, and (3) an exploration of the role of the Students’ Union in providing and coordinating volunteering opportunities and green events. The session will be delivered by Professor Pat Bailey (Pro-Vice Chancellor for Environment and Sustainability), Dr Zoe Robinson (Director of Education for Sustainability) and Students’ Union Representatives Jen Holland and Emma Hedges.

 

The final session, on Curriculum Case Studies, will explorea range of discipline-specific ESD case studies, including Sustainable Chemistry and Eco-psychology. It will be delivered by Dr John Hegarty (Senior Lecturer in Eco-psychology), Dr Katherine Haxton (Lecturer in Chemistry) and Chris Little (Curriculum Support and Development).

 

The workshop’s reflection on the approach adopted by Keele’s Green Academy team by creating a sustainability culture ‘by a thousand cuts’ will help delegates to develop novel ideas for embedding sustainability into existing activities at their respective institutions, considering the potential success and pitfalls of different opportunities within their institutional context.

New TOOLKIT: Problem-Based Learning: A Case Study of Sustainability Education

SML-Keele-PBL-toolkitA new toolkit, titled Problem-Based Learning: A Case Study of Sustainability Education, was published in October 2013, as part of a three-year project involving Keele University, the University of Manchester and Staffordshire University and funded by the National Teaching Fellowship Scheme (NTFS) of the Higher Education Academy (HEA).

The project, Hybrid problem-based learning: a scalable approach to sustainability education?, aimed to explore effective ways of adapting traditional problem-based learning (PBL) approaches for the delivery of transformative sustainability education to large student numbers. In this project the three partner universities developed different sustainability-focused modules for different academic levels and students were involved in the development of the pedagogical approaches.

One of the key outcomes of this project is the toolkit Problem-Based Learning: A Case Study of Sustainability Education – A toolkit for university educators, authored by Sophie Bessant (Keele), Professor Patrick Bailey (Keele), Dr Zoe Robinson (Keele), Bland Tomkinson (Manchester), Rosemary Tomkinson (Manchester), Professor Mark Ormerod (Keele) and Dr Rob Boast (Staffordshire). 

The toolkit, with a Foreword by Jonathon Porritt MBE, founder of Forum for the Future and Chancellor of Keele University, is aimed at educators with an interest in one of the following areas:

  • Traditional and hybrid problem-based learning (PBL)
  • Delivering less resource intensive PBL
  • The use of online learning technologies/social media in group-based teaching and learning
  • Education for sustainable development (ESD)
  • Managing student group working dynamics

The toolkit is structured as follows:

  • Why use Problem-Based Learning (PBL) for Sustainability Education?
  • Comparing Approaches to PBL
  • The Educational Benefits of PBL
  • Designing Hybrid PBL Teaching Modules for Sustainability Education
