Education for sustainable development: Guidance for UK higher education providers was formally launched at the University of the West of England (UWE) on Friday 17 October 2014.

This one-day event that attracted around 100 delegates was jointly hosted by The Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA), the Higher Education Academy (HEA) and UWE.

This ESD Guidance, published in June 2014, was developed by QAA working in partnership with the HEA, with the help of an expert advisory group chaired by Professor James Longhurst and co-convened by Dr Laura Bellingham and Simon Kemp. An earlier version of the guidance was subject to public consultation between November 2013 and January 2014, which also included a consultation event.

The event started with a brief introduction to the day by Professor James Longhurst (Chair of the QAA/HEA ESD Group and Assistant Vice-Chancellor for Environment and Sustainability UWE).

Welcoming the delegates, Professor Steve West (Vice-Chancellor, UWE) emphasised that, although embedding ESD in the curriculum is not an easy task, it is important to do so because ESD directly concerns the future of our children and grandchildren as well as our planet. He revealed that UWE is engaging students in ESD via both the formal curriculum and extra-curricular activities with the help of the students union.

The morning comprised two panel presentation/discussion sessions. Panel one introduced the purpose and expected use of the Guidance. Panel 2 was a respondents’ panel of an academic user, a professional body and student representatives. In the afternoon five parallel workshops gave the delegates an opportunity to explore working with the new guidance within their own institutional context.

Panel one

Panel one, chaired by Professor Longhurst, comprised:

  • Dr Victoria Lindsay (Director, Quality Development Group, QAA)
  • Professor Philippa Levy (Deputy Chief Executive, Academic Practice, HEA)
  • Andrew Smith (Head of Estates and Sustainable Development, Higher Education Funding Council for England HEFCE)

Dr Victoria Lindsay (Director, Quality Development Group, QAA)

Dr Lindsay outlined the origins of this ESD Guidance, namely the HEFCE-funded two-year Quality and ESD project Leading Curriculum Change for Sustainability: Strategic Approaches to Quality Enhancement, operated through an institutional arm (a consortium of five universities comprising Gloucestershire, Aston, Brighton, Exeter and Oxford Brookes) and a sector arm (working with QAA, the HEA and an Expert Advisory Board chaired by Anthony McClaran, CEO QAA). Among other things, this project organised a national conference in July 2012 and developed an online resource titled ‘Guide to Quality and Education for Sustainability’. When the project came to a successful conclusion in September 2012, the sector decided to build on the good work and the eventual fruit was this ESD Guidance.

Observing that ESD is not a single degree subject but one that is taught across and outside the curriculum, she highlighted that it is one of the educational themes in the UK Quality Code for Higher Education that cuts across academic disciplines.

Turning to the public consultation on the Guidance, she revealed that the feedback on the initial draft was wide ranging with much debate on several aspects, including the definition of sustainability, use of examples in the document, inadequate coverage of equality and social justice and concerns of prescription. These have been taken into in the development of the final version, she said.

Responding to a query on whether the Guidance is mandatory, she said that it is not but added the expression ‘mandatory by stealth’!

Professor Philippa Levy (Deputy Chief Executive (Academic Practice), HEA)

Professor Levy outlined the expected use of the guidance for strategic and individual enhancement, innovation and CPD – for example in embedding ESD in curriculum, co-curriculum and extra-curricular activities; in discipline-specific and interdisciplinary learning focusing on ‘big challenges’; and in informing joining-up of enhancement agendas (e.g. employability).

She stated that ESD is relevant to HEA’s all four workstreams, namely curriculum design, innovation pedagogies, student transition and staff transition. She said that the Guidance would inform HEA enhancement activity in a variety of ways, e.g. HEA’s commissioned research (fifth NUS survey of student attitudes and perceptions around ESD), ESD strategic enhancement framework and toolkit resources and Green Academy change programme 2015-16. Her particular mention that the Guidance would inform the Green Academy programme must have reminded some of the audience the successful Green Academy 2013-2014, including the recent seminar/workshop series.

Stating that a strong feature of the guidance is that it is not prescriptive, she said that commitment to ESD should come within enhancement and teaching excellence. Observing that higher education is co-created, she expected that the Guidance would be used in the same spirit.

Andrew Smith (Head of Estates and Sustainable Development, Higher Education Funding Council for England HEFCE)

Andrew Smith said that students wanted ESD in the curriculum and it was good to see the Guidance emerging in response. He praised the Guidance for its clarity and inter-agency collaboration.

Revealing that sustainable development is now a core of HEFCE’s work, he outlined the progress of the forthcoming HEFCE Sustainable Development Framework, which comprises three sections: Reducing the environmental impact of the sector, creating a model sustainable economy, and engaging students. Last winter, the initial draft was subject to a public consultation, which included two events and webinars and also saw students being invited to a HEFCE consultation for the first time.

He believed that the HEFCE SD Framework, to be published in November 2014, would provide a solid support base for higher education’s other sustainability-oriented efforts such as this ESD Guidance. He was also of the view that UK is leading the world in sustainability in higher education.

Panel two

Panel two, chaired by Simon Kemp (University Lead in ESD, University of Southampton, former academic lead for ESD at the HEA and co-convenor of the QAA-HEA ESD Group), comprised:

  • Chris Willmore (Academic Director of Undergraduate Studies, University of Bristol)
  • Iain Patton (Chief Executive, Environmental Association for Universities and Colleges EAUC)
  • Hannah Khan and Laura-Kate Howells (UWE Students’ Union)

Chris Willmore (Academic Director of Undergraduate Studies, University of Bristol)

Asking whether the ESD guide would make any difference, Chris Willmore looked at its potential impact on three types of institutions, namely green, keen and grey, and argued that the biggest impact would be on the middle group, the keens.

She observed that this guidance would give permission and validity for ESD to move up the agenda in UK higher education while nudging creative ESD journeys at universities. However, she said that if it was made mandatory, it could become tokenistic.

She also declared that this was the first QAA document that allowed academics to have fun.

Iain Patton (Chief Executive, Environmental Association for Universities and Colleges EAUC)

Welcoming the symbolic leadership from QAA and HEA on ESD, Iain Patton saw the guidance as a stepping stone and said that its value lies in the impact on quality. Are graduates ready for the complexity in the outside world? he asked.

He observed that the Guidance would be capable of crossing the Rubicon between curriculum, campus and community and would help institutional leaders see opportunities and be empowered. However, he feared that the Guidance would not work properly if it was made a tick-box exercise.

He felt that the time was right for the sector to step up the sustainability agenda and proposed that ESD enthusiasts should hold a sustainability summit now.

Hannah Khan and Laura-Kate Howells (UWE Students’ Union)

Hannah and Laura-Kate stated that NUS-HEA annual survey on students’ attitude towards sustainable development consistently demonstrates that they want sustainability in the curriculum. They emphasised that, because employability links with sustainability skills, the former could be used to engage students with ESD. Moreover, they elaborated on the UWE Green Leaders programme.

Parallel workshops

In the afternoon five parallel workshops gave the delegates an opportunity to explore working with the new guidance within their own institutional context. They selected a workshop depending on where their institution was in its ESD journey, i.e. starting to address ESD, some way along in its ESD journey, or more advanced in its ESD activity.

In the workshop feedback session that followed, five facilitators and also members of the QAA/HEA ESD Group – Professor Debby Cotton, Simon Kemp (co-convenor), Dr Laura Bellingham (co-convenor), Dr Sarah Speight and Dr Alastair Robertson – reported back key points, which included the following:

  • Academics’ belief that ESD is not relevant to their discipline is a key barrier to advancing ESD
  • The QAA-HEA stamp on the Guidance is extremely useful
  • The Guidance is a stimulus for debate
  • The Guidance enables to use external recognition for ESD to drive the agenda internally in institutions
  • To engage students, promote the Guidance in other forms
  • Set up some sort of support mechanism such as a resource bank
  • There should be a platform to continue to talk and to share ideas, case studies and experiences

The last two points on ‘What Next?’ resonated the thoughts of ten (hypothetical) staff from UK higher education on supplementing this ESD Guidance.

An end with a high note…

Delivering the closing remarks, Professor Longhurst observed that there exists enormous enthusiasm and energy around ESD in the sector and announced that a Sustainability Summit would become a reality next year…

With the ESD Guidance, it seems that UK higher education has a bigger opportunity in using sustainability as a vehicle to position itself at the pinnacle of global higher education….

QAA/HEA Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) Guidance | Formal launch on 17 October at UWE

SML-ESD-Guidance-launch

The formal launch of new guidance, Education for sustainable development: Guidance for UK higher education providers, will take place at Severn Room, Exhibition and Conference Centre, Frenchay Campus, University of the West of England (UWE), Bristol, BS34 8QZ on Friday 17 October 2014, 10.00-16.00.

Jointly hosted by The Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA), the Higher Education Academy (HEA) and the University of the West of England (UWE), this one-day event will be of interest to programme leaders, teaching staff, institutional managers with responsibility for academic quality, sustainability leaders, and students and their representatives.

This Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) Guidance, published in June 2014, was developed by QAA working in partnership with the HEA, with the help of an expert advisory group chaired by Professor James Longhurst of UWE and co-convened by Dr Laura Bellingham and Simon Kemp. An earlier version of the guidance was subject to public consultation between November 2013 and January 2014.

Day’s programme

Following an introduction to the day by Professor Jim Longhurst (Chair of the QAA/HEA ESD Group and Assistant Vice-Chancellor for Environment and Sustainability UWE), Professor Steve West (Vice-Chancellor, UWE) will welcome the delegates.

The morning will be structured around two panel presentation/discussion sessions. Panel one will introduce the purpose and expected use of the guidance, and panel two will be a respondents’ panel of academic users, professional body and student representatives.

Panel one, chaired by Professor Jim Longhurst, will comprise:

  • Dr Victoria Lindsay (Director, Quality Development Group, QAA)
  • Professor Philippa Levy (Deputy Chief Executive (Academic Practice), HEA)
  • Andrew Smith (Head of Estates and Sustainable Development, Higher Education Funding Council for England HEFCE)

Panel two, chaired by Simon Kemp (University Lead in ESD, University of Southampton and former academic lead for ESD at the HEA), will comprise:

  • Chris Willmore (Academic Director of Undergraduate Studies, University of Bristol)
  • Iain Patton (Chief Executive, Environmental Association for Universities and Colleges EAUC)
  • Hannah Kahn and Laura-Kate Howells (UWE Students’ Union)

In the afternoon parallel workshops will give the delegates an opportunity to explore working with the new guidance within their own institutional context. They will be able to select a workshop depending on where their institution is in its ESD journey, i.e. starting to address ESD, some way along in its ESD journey, or more advanced in its ESD activity. Each workshop  will be facilitated by a member of the QAA/HEA ESD Group.

The event will come to a close with feedback from the workshops and conclusions from the day.

ESD Guidance

This Guidance, which aims to assist staff in UK HEIs in incorporating ESD within the curricula of their respective disciplines, comprises two main parts:

  • The identification of graduate outcomes: What students will be able to know, understand and do after an appropriate period of learning
  • A focus on teaching, learning and assessment: The ways in which educators can work with students to help them achieve and demonstrate the outcomes

Although it relates primarily to undergraduate provision and assessment at Level 6, the guidance may also be helpful to educators working at other levels (e.g. Level 5, including foundation degrees, and postgraduate). Moreover, it should be read in conjunction with the appropriate QAA subject benchmark statement.

Chapter B3 of the UK Quality Code for Higher Education (the Quality Code) on Learning and Teaching identifies education for sustainability (or ESD) as an educational theme that cuts across academic disciplines. This guidance therefore complements the Quality Code but does not form an explicit part of it.

Higher Education Academy (HEA) awards National Teaching Fellowship to a pioneer in Sustainability Education

???????????????????????The Higher Education Academy (HEA) awarded in June 2014 a National Teaching Fellowship (NTF) to Professor Stephen Sterling in recognition of his pioneering efforts to advance sustainability education. He is one of the 55 recipients of this prestigious award for excellence in higher education teaching and support for learning, selected from over 180 nominations submitted by higher education institutions across England, Northern Ireland and Wales.

Professor Sterling is Professor of Sustainability Education (Centre for Sustainable Futures CSF) and Head of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) at Plymouth University. His research interests lie in the interrelationships between ecological thinking, systemic change, and learning at individual and institutional scales to help meet the challenge of accelerating the educational response to the sustainability agenda.

His varied career has included roles as teacher, deputy director of a national educational body, consultant (particularly to WWF-UK), freelance academic, academic tutor at London South Bank University (LSBU), and Professor at Plymouth University. Among his credits are co-founding/writing the first masters course in the UK on education for sustainability (at LSBU), co-editing the first book published anywhere on this field, writing/leading on another three key books in the area, producing the HEA-commissioned Future Fit Framework that has inspired academics and universities to embrace sustainability in their teaching, and leading a WWF project on systems thinking, namely ‘Linking Thinking – new perspectives on thinking and learning for sustainability’. He has also played a critical role in Plymouth’s commitment to and success in sustainability for many years.

The HEA NTF scheme is funded by the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE), the Higher Education Funding Council for Wales (HEFCW) and the Department for Employment and Learning in Northern Ireland. It is open to staff whose teaching or support roles enhance the student learning experience at institutions in England, Northern Ireland and Wales.

New QAA/HEA ESD Guidance to complement UK Quality Code for Higher Education

SML-QAA-ESD-docThe QAA/HEA ESD Guidance, titled Education for sustainable development: Guidance for UK higher education providers, was published in June 2014. It is a product of collaboration between the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA) and the Higher Education Academy (HEA).

Aim and who it is for

The guidance aims to assist staff in UK higher education institutions in incorporating education for sustainable development (ESD) within the curricula of their respective disciplines.

This reference point for use in curriculum design, delivery and review is mainly targeted at academics, educational developers and programme leaders. However, it may also be of interest to those with responsibility for quality assurance and enhancement, and the management of teaching and learning.

Although this guidance relates primarily to undergraduate provision and assessment at Level 6, it may also be helpful to educators working at other levels (e.g. Level 5, including foundation degrees, and postgraduate). Moreover, it should be read in conjunction with the appropriate QAA subject benchmark statement.

Status

Chapter B3 of the UK Quality Code for Higher Education (the Quality Code) on Learning and Teaching identifies education for sustainability (or ESD) as an educational theme that cuts across academic disciplines. This guidance therefore complements the Quality Code but does not form an explicit part of it.

Structure and content

The ESD guidance recognises that there are many ways in which ESD could be incorporated within the curricula and therefore it is not prescriptive about delivery. It only presents an outcomes-based framework for use in curriculum design, and general guidance on approaches to teaching, learning and assessment. Moreover, it is not specific to any particular degree programme or subject specialism.

The document comprises two main parts:

  • The identification of graduate outcomes: What students will be able to know, understand and do after an appropriate period of learning
  • A focus on teaching, learning and assessment: The ways in which educators can work with students to help them achieve and demonstrate the outcomes

How it was prepared

The guidance was prepared by an expert group drawn from the UK higher education community with expertise in ESD. The group was chaired by Professor James Longhurst and co-convened by Dr Laura Bellingham and Simon Kemp.

An earlier version of the guidance was subject to public consultation between November 2013 and January 2014.

For more information, please contact Dr Laura Bellingham L.Bellingham@qaa.ac.uk

Informal communication has a key role in sustainability-oriented institutional change, says Green Academy Lead at Worcester

SML1-ImageMAIN-HEA-WorcesterInformal communication has a key role to play in driving sustainability-oriented institutional change, said Antonius Raghubansie (Green Academy Lead at the University of Worcester UW) at a workshop titled ‘The Worcester sustainability model now and the future: maintaining momentum from the green academy’ held at the university on 28 May 2014.

??????????????????????

Hosted as part of the Workshop and Seminar Series 2013/2014 of the Higher Education Academy (HEA), this event shared and reflected on the approaches used at Worcester to create Institutional change in response to the sustainability challenge, discussed examples across subject disciplines and showcased the project work of students.

The event started with a welcome by Dr Marie Stow???????????????????????ell (Director of Quality and Educational Development UW), who emphasised on the importance of impacting on students’ attitudes and values with a view of building a community of practice rather than merely teaching about sustainability.

Representing the HEA, Helen Howard outlined the HEA Green Academy programme and said that sustainability is important for universities to enhance the effectiveness of learning. She also highlighted that innovation, a key element in institutional sustainability programmes, would depend on the different contexts of respective institutions.

The day was structured around three main sessions:

  • Curriculum and Engagement (followed by Panel Questions and Answers)
  • Examples of Sustainability in the Curriculum from across UW (followed by Panel Q&A)
  • Participant workshop: Marginal Gains

Will Bowen-Jones (Head of Education Development Unit) kicked off the first session, on Curriculum and Engagement. Speaking on the Learning & Teaching Strategy and sustainability at Worcester, he highlighted that producing graduates who are ethically and environmentally responsible is central to the university’s strategic plan.

Katy Boom (Director of Environmental Sustainability UW), speaking on Campus and Community, revealed how the university uses both community projects and the campus as curricula and extra curricula sustainability opportunities for student learning. She focused on a number of flagship projects, including Energize Worcester funded by the NUS Students Green Fund. She also elaborated on the types of funding available for curriculum projects.

Peng Li (Project Manager Energize Worcester UW), presenting the student perspective, revealed that the majority of the students want their universities to become more sustainable.

Antonius Raghubansie (Green Academy Lead and Associate Head, Worcester Business School UW), speaking on the university’s distinctive Sustainability Elective for all disciplines, revealed the story behind its development and stressed on the key role that informal communication had played in the process, particularly in the initial stages. He also highlighted the distinctive elements of this elective, including the student-centred approach, the focus on personal responsibility, assessment through live projects and the virtual learning environment (VLE).

Wendy Corbett (Digital Publishing Creative Consultant and Visiting Lecturer in Design and Creative Digital Media), spoke on linking curriculum, campus, community and co-creating knowledge through creative digital technologies and online learning and teaching strategies. She presented the digital magazine hosted by the university, www.susthingsout.com, which comprises an external facing side (a publishing platform) and an internal learning side, which only students and staff can access. She observed that, in the absence of instructor competence and course content, no amount of technology would add value to learning.

Professor Stephen Martin (Visiting Professor), speaking on ‘Managing Complexity: Integrating the “Witness” Session,’ stressed on the importance of building bridges between the university and its wider community. He stated that universities should bring interdisciplinarity and complexity into the lecture rooms so that, when students leave as graduates, whey would be well prepared for the messy outer world.

During the lunch break, the participants visited student displays and engaged in discussions. Moreover, adding a touch of celebration to the event, Steve Egan (Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the Higher Education Funding Council for England HEFCE) presented the Energize Worcester Energy Saving Champion 2014 award to Anthony Ball.

The second session, on Examples of Sustainability in the Curriculum, consisted of the following:

  • Green Design | Andy Stevenson (Senior Lecturer, Graphic Design & Multimedia)
  • The Business Curriculum | Dr Mike Bagshaw (Senior Lecturer, Leadership)
  • Sports Science and Sport Studies Curriculum | Lerverne Barber (Associate Head, Institute of Sport and Exercise Science)
  • Masters in Sustainable Development Advocacy | Christianne Wakeham (Course Leader)

The third session was a participant workshop on Marginal Gains, led by Will Bowen-Jones. In this small group work, which used a sustainability café approach, the participants shared ideas, perspectives and experience, building on the content of the earlier presentations.

The workshop was followed by an optional tour of The Hive, UK’s first public/university library, which is a partnership between the University of Worcester and Worcestershire County Council. Leading the tour, Iain Paul (Design Manager), revealed how vision, leadership, collaboration and consultation with many stakeholders paved the way for this multiple award winning joint library and history centre, housed in an ‘Outstanding’ sustainable building.

HEA – Worcester workshop | The Worcester sustainability model now and the future: maintaining momentum from the green academy

SML-HEA-worcesterA workshop, titled ‘The Worcester sustainability model now and the future: maintaining momentum from the green academy,’ will be held at the University of Worcester (UW) on 28 May 2014.

Hosted as part of the Workshop and Seminar Series 2013/2014 of the Higher Education Academy (HEA), this event will:

  • Share and reflect on the approaches used at Worcester to create Institutional change in response to the sustainability challenge
  • Share and discuss examples across subject disciplines, covering both formal and informal curricula; and
  • Showcase the project work of students

As a prompt for discussion, the workshop will share some of the methods adopted by the university, particularly the development of a cross-institution multi-disciplinary Sustainability Elective Module and how courses have developed learning opportunities across the institution to embed learning about sustainability.

The event will start with a welcome by Dr Marie Stowell (Director of Quality and Educational Development UW) and an introduction by Helen Howard (The HEA).

The day is structured around three main sessions:

  • Curriculum and Engagement (followed by Panel Questions and Answers)
  • Examples of Sustainability in the Curriculum from across UW (followed by Panel Q&A)
  • Participant workshop: Marginal Gains

The event will end with an optional tour of The Hive, UK’s first public/university library.

The first session, on Curriculum and Engagement, will comprise the following presentations:

  • Learning & Teaching Strategy and Sustainability at Worcester | Will Bowen-Jones (Head of Education Development Unit)
  • Campus and Community: Using both community projects and the campus as curricula and extra curricula sustainability opportunities for student learning | Katy Boom (Director of Environmental Sustainability)
  • Student Perspective | Peng Li (MA student Project and Manager Energize Worcester, Student Green Fund project)
  • A distinctive Sustainability Elective for all Disciplines | Antonius Raghubansie (Green Academy Lead and Associate Head, Worcester Business School)
  • Linking Curriculum, Campus, Community: Co-creating Knowledge through Creative Digital Technologies and Online Learning and Teaching Strategies | Wendy Corbett (Digital Publishing Creative Consultant and Visiting Lecturer in Design and Creative Digital Media)
  • Managing Complexity: Integrating the “Witness” Session | Professor Stephen Martin (Visiting Professor)
  • Funding for Curriculum Projects | Katy Boom

The Lunch break will also include Student Displays/Discussions.

The second session, on Examples of Sustainability in the Curriculum, will consist of the following:

  • Green Design | Andy Stevenson (Senior Lecturer, Graphic Design & Multimedia)
  • The Business Curriculum | Mike Bagshaw (Senior Lecturer, Leadership)
  • Sports Science and Sport Studies Curriculum | Lerverne Barber (Associate Head, Institute of Sport and Exercise Science)
  • Masters in Sustainable Development Advocacy | Christianne Wakeham (Course Leader)

The third session, the Participant workshop, led by Will Bowen-Jones, will be small group work, using a sustainability café approach with a focus on sharing experience.

The optional tour of The Hive, led by Iain Paul (Design Manager), will reveal how vision, leadership, collaboration and consultation with many stakeholders paved the way for The Hive, a multiple award winning joint library and history centre, housed in an ‘outstanding’ sustainable building.

The event is free of charge but a place must be reserved through online registration (see link below).

Sustainability leadership is all around us, says Director SD at Canterbury Christ Church University

SML-HEA-CCCU-postevent‘There is leadership all around us for building a sustainable future,’ said Dr Peter Rands (Director of Sustainability Development, Canterbury Christ Church University CCCU) at a workshop on ‘Grassroots and green shoots: a green academy inspired ESF (education for sustainable futures) initiative’, held at Blake Hall College, London on 16 May 2014.

Hosted as part of the Workshop and Seminar Series 2013/2014 of the Higher Education Academy (HEA), the event mainly focused on the ‘Futures Initiative’ (FI), an innovative approach to sustainability and environmental responsibility developed at CCCU.

The day began with an introduction by a representative from the HEA, who emphasised on the importance of embedding Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) on all aspects of the higher education curriculum.

SML-CCCUSusWebsite

Dr Stephen Scoffham (Director FI) introduced the FI as a forward-looking initiative and a futures agenda that aims to build a wider culture of sustainability within the institution through a set of staff development programmes. He outlined what FI had involved, namely capacity building, supporting sustainability and reframing the curriculum. He also presented ‘Exploring Sustainability’ (http://www.canterbury.ac.uk/exploring-sustainability), the recently launched website to support the process of facilitated engagement.

Dr Peter Rands outlined CCCU’s wider sustainability endeavour. On the FI, he presented ‘Strawberries and cream: nurturing creativity’, the fruitful journey of a creative and pragmatic approach. Reflecting upon the FI’s journey so far, he said the university has planted fifty strawberry plants, referring to the 50 funded projects under this initiative.

Dr Nicola Kemp (CCCU) together with Dr Scoffham explored the FI process. Dr Karen Shepherdson (CCCU) talked on ‘Yurtworks… or pulling out the plug’, presenting an FI-funded project on Photography.

Small group activities, facilitated byDr Scoffham and Dr Adriana Consorte-McCrea (CCCU), gave the participants the opportunity to reflect on what had attracted them to the sustainability agenda in the first place as well as on their connection to nature, each other and themselves.

The workshop helped the delegates to reflect on how a bottom-up or grassroots approach to embedding sustainability might work within their own institutions.
