An Inconvenient Truth to rock Ashden Awards 2017 in London | Al Gore, to the fore

Former US Vice-President Al Gore will deliver the keynote at the 2017 Ashden Awards ceremony to be held at the Royal Geographical Society in London on Thursday 15 June 2017. The ceremony week will also see Ashden Conferences and other events to showcase the winners’ work and discuss the challenges of creating a low-carbon future.

The Awards, established in 2001, are globally recognised as a measure for excellence in the field of green energy.

Ashden Awards 2017

Keynote speaker: Al Gore the keynote speaker is no stranger to the Ashden Awards ceremony. He hosted it in 2007, not long after the release of his ground-breaking film on global warming, An Inconvenient Truth. This time, his appearance coincides with the release of another of his movies, An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth to Power.

In the keynote he is expected to share his views on the progress since last year’s Paris climate agreement at COP21, the impact of the current political environment on the efforts to encourage divestment from fossil fuels, and how this year’s winners are contributing to the battle against climate change.

The finalists: The shortlist for the 2017 Awards comprises 22 pioneering sustainable energy organisations and programmes under two categories:

  • UK finalists
  • International finalists

With a focus on reducing carbon emissions and saving energy, the work of the UK finalists spans a number of areas, including energy usage in buildings, energy storage, smart energy hardware and software, and clean air in cities.

The UK finalists are:

  • Big Birmingham Bikes
  • Carbon Co-op
  • Nottingham City Council
  • Passivhaus Trust
  • RES Group
  • Smarter Grid Solutions
  • Sunamp Ltd
  • Switchee Ltd

With projects in Tajikistan, Nepal, Lesotho, East Africa, West Africa, India, China and Malaysia, the International finalists are supporting best practice in a number of areas, including sustainable buildings, clean energy for women and girls, innovative finance, clean energy and water, powering business and sustainable travel.

The International finalists are:

  • Africa Clean Energy
  • Ampere Vehicles
  • Angaza Design
  • Ecolibirium
  • Empower Generation
  • Futurepump
  • GPS Renewables
  • Haileybury Youth Trust
  • Hangzhou Bicycles
  • Mobisol
  • Pamir Energy
  • PEG Africa
  • SunCulture
  • R Hamzah & Yeang Sdn. Bhd

Prize money and other benefits: The winners, who will receive a financial award of up to £20,000, will also benefit from national and global exposure, tailored support to help them develop their work even further, access to new networks and, more importantly, joining the community of over 190 Ashden Alumni.

Funders: Funders of the 2017 Ashden Awards include Citi, the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation, the Garfield Weston Foundation, Grosvenor, the Ikea Foundation, Impax Asset Management, UK aid, and the Waterloo Foundation.

Ashden

Driven by the belief that sustainable energy is the biggest challenge – and the biggest opportunity – in these times, Ashden is a charity that champions and supports the leaders in sustainable energy to accelerate the transition to a low-carbon world.

Envisioning a world where there is sustainable energy for all, Ashden uncovers the best in sustainable energy and shows the world its potential to improve lives, boost economic growth and accelerate the transition to a low-carbon world.

Ashden’s work could be outlined as follows:

  • Celebrating success: The Awards uncover and reward sustainable energy pioneers in the UK and developing world, providing them with a global platform to promote their work and to access sustainable energy leaders.
  • Helping winners grow: Working with expert partners, Ashden offers Award winners tailor-made support for their expansion, including mentoring, business and technical guidance and introductions to finance. It also helps broker partnerships between winners.
  • Sharing best practice: In numerous ways the charity helps its Award winners to share their expertise as an encouragement for others to follow. These include its flagship LESS CO2 mentoring programme for UK schools, its support to the Ashden India Renewable Energy Collective, conferences and other events, and its online resources section.
  • Influencing policy: Ashden champions Award winners’ solutions through events, publicity, research and engagement in policy consultations, and it helps them better understand how to influence energy policy.

Since 2001, Ashden Awards winners have transformed the lives of more than 79 million people worldwide, through solutions that range from solar lanterns in Africa to low-carbon building innovation in the UK.

big-newcastle-conf-8nov

The annual conference of Newcastle University’s Institute for Sustainability (IfS) will take place in London (Chapter Spitalfields, 9 Frying Pan Alley, London E1 7HS) on 8 November 2016 from 10am to 4pm.

Titled ‘Sustainable Futures: Research, Policy and Practice’, this event will focus on research, policy and practice that will help achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goals, exploring the challenges in sustainability research at a range of scales – regional, national and international – with a view of  enhancing collaboration among academia, industry and policy.

The conference will feature:

  • A keynote speaker: Professor Patrick Paul Walsh (Professor of International Development Studies at University College Dublin and Senior Advisor to UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network SDSN, New York);
  • Some of the University’s sustainability researchers, led by Professor Phil Taylor (Director IfS); and
  • Sustainability experts from industry

The day’s programme comprises four sessions.

Session 1 (What is the role of academia in helping to meet the SDGs and where should they have input in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development?) will explore how academic research could play a greater role in policy and practice for sustainable development.

Session 2 (Addressing global challenges with integrated solutions) will introduce research from Newcastle University researchers on addressing global challenges for sustainability through integrated solutions.

Session 3, a roundtable session (How to bring research to policy for sustainable development), will bring together experts in research, policy and practice to identify how academic research and demonstration can inform policy for sustainable development in areas of air quality, energy, food, water, agriculture and waste.

A poster session will showcase some of the University’s sustainability research projects.

BIG-NexusUrbanWorkshop

A Nexus workshop, titled ‘Nexuses of the Urban: Interactions between Water, Energy and Food Provision for Sustainable Cities’, will take place at the University of Sussex from 12 to 13 May 2016.

Workshop participants will take stock of what kind of plural understandings of ‘urban nexuses’ are emerging, produced by (partnerships between) activists, communities, think tanks, corporations, and multilateral organizations, natural scientists, humanities scholars and social scientists.

The workshop will particularly reflect on the contribution that different social science perspectives might make in understanding urban nexuses, and how social scientists might effectively participate in inter- and trans-disciplinary initiatives. Another aspect that will be considered is what kind of policy mechanisms and events might support the pursuit of the partnerships for developing new understandings.

The programme will be structured around the following orienting questions

  • What divergent framings and understandings of ‘urban nexuses’ are emerging and why are they important, in what ways and to whom?
  • What are the implications of these understandings and their foci for governance of nexus interactions by public, private and hybrid arrangements?
  • What implications do these understandings hold for political-economic action by, and for alliances between, civil society organizations, businesses and social movements striving for sustainability and justice?
  • What kind of relations (inter- and trans-disciplinary alliances, engagements with the material world) underpin the making of the emerging understandings of ‘urban nexuses’?
  • What new inter- and trans-disciplinary approaches (and concepts) do we need to further understand interactions at ‘urban nexuses’, including the interdependent vulnerabilities associated with access to food, water and energy in cities?

Led by Dr Saurabh Arora from Science Policy Research Unit (SPRU) at the University of Sussex, this event is supported by the core team of Nexus Network.

The Nexus Network

Funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), the Nexus Network is a three-year initiative to foster debate, innovative research and practical collaborations across the linked ‘nexus’ domains of food, energy, water and the environment. It brings together researchers, policy makers, business leaders and civil society to develop collaborative projects and improve decision making in these areas.

The Network’s aims are to:

  • Encourage debate, fund innovative research and improve decision making across the linked ‘nexus challenges’.
  • Support interdisciplinary, cross-sector collaborations
  • Enable researchers and stakeholders to develop and share new methodologies, data, conceptual frameworks, skills and practices directed towards nexus challenges.

Its partner organisations are:

  • Faculty of Social Sciences | University of Sheffield
  • Science and Technology Policy Research Unit (SPRU) | University of Sussex
  • College of Social Sciences and International Studies | University of Exeter
  • Social, Technological and Environmental Pathways to Sustainability (STEPS) | University of Sussex
  • Centre for Social and Economic Research on the Global Environment (CSERGE) | University of Exeter and University of East Anglia (UEA)
  • Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership | University of Cambridge
