Plymouth to host Sustainable Earth Forum 2016 on 23-24 June

BIG-Plymouth-SusEarthForum

Sustainable Earth 2016 Forum (#EarthForum16) will take place at Plymouth University on 23 and 24 June 2016.

Organised by the university’s Sustainable Earth Institute (formerly Institute for Sustainability Solutions Research ISSR), this global forum for connecting research with action will bring together researchers, businesses, community groups and individuals with the aim of sparking and encouraging collaborations for a sustainable Earth.

This forum will begin with a welcome by Professor Judith Petts (Vice-Chancellor, Plymouth University) and then an introduction by Chair Professor Iain Stewart (Director of the Sustainable Earth Institute, Plymouth University). Keynote speakers include:

  • Sir Mark Walport (Government Chief Scientific Adviser in the UK)
  • Wendy Darke (Founder of True to Nature Limited and former Head of the BBC Natural History Unit)
  • Craig Bennett (CEO, Friends of the Earth)
  • Anthony Hobley (CEO, Carbon Tracker)

The programme is structured around three sessions – each exploring three themes:

  • Session 1: Health and Wellbeing, Biodiversity and Conservation, and Cities and Communities
  • Session 2: Water, Energy, and Responsible Consumption and Production
  • Session 3: Climate Change, Resources and Education

The theme ‘Education’ under Session 3 will feature Professor Stephen Sterling (Professor of Sustainability Education, Plymouth University).

At this forum, delegates will enjoy the opportunity of taking part in a variety of reflective activities ranging from a visit to a solar farm to a tour through the universe. They will also hear from leading organisations including Salvation Army, Environment Agency, Plymouth Energy Community, Westcountry Rivers Trust, Langage Farm, University of Iceland and Plymouth University.

The first day’s conference dinner will be followed by a talk by poet Matt Harvey on ‘The power of poetry for provoking participation in Sustainability’ and then evening musical delights by The Q-dettes.

Sustainable Earth 2016 Forum builds on five years of previous sustainability events held at Plymouth University.

EAUC Conference 2016 at UWE in May | Role of education in creating healthier, happier cities

BIG-EAUC-Conf-2016

The 20th annual conference of The Environmental Association for Universities and Colleges (EAUC) will take place at the University of the West of England (UWE) in Bristol on 25-26 May 2016.

Taking into account the global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) adopted by the UN General Assembly in September 2015, the conference focuses on one goal, namely SDG11, which calls upon countries to make cities more inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable. The event will provide the delegates with an opportunity to explore the legacy of the host city Bristol’s European Green Capital Award 2015.

Titled ‘Learning and Legacy: The Role of Education in Creating Healthier, Happier Cities,’ the conference will explore the important role that universities and colleges can play in encouraging community cohesion, connecting stakeholders, driving social and business innovation and acting as a catalyst for change for building sustainable cities.

The conference will bring together delegates from the further and higher education sector, including those responsible for environmental management, estates and facilities, finance and procurement as well as curriculum leaders and students. It will comprise plenary sessions, interactive workshops, and facilitated networking events, a gala dinner and an exhibition.

The programme will feature a keynote panel session and three keynote addresses:

Keynote Panel Session | Bristol 2015

Chair: Professor Jim Longhurst (UWE) and Chris Willmore (University of Bristol)

Panellists (from Bristol 2015 European Green Capital and local businesses): Andrew Garrad, Gary Topp, Alan Bailey, Gem Heywood and Dr Georgina Gough

Keynote | A Challenging Journey: Driving Change for Tomorrow’s Leaders?

Mike Barry (Director of Sustainable Business, Marks and Spencer M&S)

Keynote | Community Connections: Striving for Full-Spectrum Sustainability in our Cities

David Orr (Paul Sears Distinguished Professor of Environmental Studies & Politics EMERITUS and Counsellor to the President, Oberlin College, Ohio, USA)

Keynote | A Bed-time Story

Mac Macartney (Founder, Embercombe)

The sessions are structured around the framework for Learning in Future Environments (LiFE), falling into four main ‘priority areas’:

  • Estates and Operations | Biodiversity, sustainable ICT, utilities, travel, transport, construction and renovation, resource efficiency and waste
  • Leadership and Governance | Leadership, staff engagement and human resources
  • Learning, Teaching and Research | Learning, teaching, student engagement, research (both sustainable research and research into sustainability)
  • Partnership and Engagement | Business and industry interface, community and public engagement and procurement and suppliers

The programme will also feature a number of case studies in the sessions and most of them are winners or highly commended entries in Green Gown Awards.

In partnership with the National Union of Students (NUS), the conference will hold a number of workshops that will be particularly relevant to students and students’ union representatives.

The event will also facilitate networking in a number of ways, including a pre-conference social the night before the main conference, an exhibition and a gala dinner.

EAUC AGM 2016 will also be held during the conference. The EAUC is a not-for-profit charity with a membership of over 215 universities and colleges, supporting sustainability in the UK tertiary education sector.

New book | Professional development of European university educators on Education for Sustainable Development (ESD)

BIG-UE4SD-book-NEW

A new book, titled Leading Practice Publication: Professional development of University Educators on Education for Sustainable Development in European countries, was launched at COPERNICUS Alliance Conference on Evaluation and Assessment of Higher Education for Sustainable Development in Madrid Spain in November 2015.

This book, which brings together – for the first time – best practice in higher education professional development and Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), presents 13 best practice examples from 10 European countries, namely Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Germany, Greece, Latvia, Poland, Spain and the UK. It is the result of nearly two years of work (2013-2015) on the EU-funded project University Educators for Sustainable Development (UE4SD).

The book | Leading Practice Publication

This publication aims:

  • To provide an overview of the best practice examples of professional development opportunities for European university educators in the area of ESD
  • To inspire the reader to engage in supporting further developments in this field

It is structured around six main chapters:

  • PURPOSE highlights the importance of the higher education (HE) sector in addressing the challenges of sustainable development and in educating the future generation of leaders.
  • POLICY provides an overview of ESD strategy documents and current global developments including the UN Decade on ESD, the Global Action Programme and the UNECE Strategy on ESD.
  • PRINCIPLES deals with basic principles of ESD, teacher competences, quality enhancement and professional development at HE level.
  • EXAMPLES presents information on the selection process and development of the 13 best practice examples from 10 European countries providing university staff development on ESD.
  • REFLECTION summarises on the 13 case studies and provides an overview of key lessons learned.
  • PATHWAYS concludes with key messages and recommendations for future developments.

This publication is expected to serve as a reference point for current best practice in this important field of European higher education.

Two best practice examples from the UK

Among the 13 best practice examples are two from the UK:

  • Green Academy programme
  • Learning for Sustainable Futures programme

Green Academy programme, run by UK’s Higher Education Academy (HEA), is a change programme that brings together staff teams from different universities to plan, develop and implement ESD institution-wide change initiatives.

Learning for Sustainability Futures programme of the University of Gloucestershire provides professional development in ESD for both teaching staff and staff who support student learning.

The project | UE4SD

The University Educators for Sustainable Development (UE4SD) project (2013 to 2016), funded by the European Commission under Lifelong Learning Programme Erasmus Academic Networks (2013–2016), comprises 53 partners from 33 countries across Europe, divided into four regions.

The lead partner, the University of Gloucestershire (UK – North Hub), works closely with three core partners: the Autonomous University of Madrid (Spain – South Hub); Charles University in Prague (Czech Republic – East Hub); and Leuphana University of Lüneburg (Germany – West Hub). Moreover, activities of this project are closely associated with COPERNICUS Alliance – the European Network of Higher Education for Sustainable Development.

The project comprises three distinct stages, building an understanding of the situation at European HEIs and developing an effective response.

The first stage (2014) mapped the status of ESD in higher education and existing ESD professional development opportunities for university educators in Europe. The resulting four regional reports (UE4SD North, West, South, East), which summarised national mapping exercises conducted by the 53 partner institutions, were compiled as part of the State of the Art Report (link below for free download). This report analysed the situation and drew conclusions for all 33 countries across Europe. The mapping exercise showed that ESD is gaining importance in higher education across Europe, but the understanding of ESD and approaches to it differ.

The second stage (2015–2016) includes the development of practical resources for university educators in ESD, building upon the experience gained from the mapping stage of the project. This Leading Practice Publication and an associated Online Platform of Resources are part of this stage. The Online Platform of Resources is a collection of good practice examples of professional development opportunities for European higher education.

The third stage (2016) will include the development of an Academy for ESD in Higher Education based on the methodological materials and other resources collected in the first two stages.

Universities have an obligation to empower students to deal with climate change, says Porritt at LSBU

BIG-PorrittAtLSBU-posteventUniversities have a binding, moral obligation to ensure that their graduates not only understand the dynamics of climate change but also are capable of dealing with its challenges, said eminent environmentalist and writer Jonathon Porritt CBE at an event on 13 October 2015 hosted by London South Bank University (LSBU).

The event, titled ‘Higher Education No Longer Needs to Protect the Environment’, started with an introduction by Professor Patrick Bailey, Deputy Vice Chancellor LSBU.

Jonathon Porritt started with a spiritual tone, referring to recent Pope Francis statement on the importance of nature. Before moving to sustainability in higher education, he talked about a range of environmental and sustainability issues in the wider world.

His commentary was followed by a Q&A session, run by Professor Bailey and Andrea Smith, Ethical and Environmental Officer of the student union. The evening of discussion came to an end with a networking session with refreshments.

The write-up below has been crafted using what Jonathon Porritt and Professor Bailey said in the event.

Jonathon Porritt is Co-Founder of Forum for the Future, Chancellor of Keele University, former Chairman of the UK Sustainable Development Commission and former Director of Friends of the Earth.

Before joining LSBU as Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor Patrick Bailey was Pro Vice Chancellor Environment and Sustainability at Keele University and received the Leadership Award in Green Gown Awards 2014.

We should get students excited about green innovation, says Jonathon Porritt

Over the last several decades, the environment agenda has moved from a minority fringe to a majority viewpoint. However, what we can see today is all key global environmental indicators going in the wrong direction. Moreover, climate change, which is the most formidable challenge, overshadows other critical environmental issues, such as air pollution and ocean acidification.

A reason for our failure in the environmental front is how we see nature. Nature has intrinsic rights regardless of its value to human beings but we continue to look at it through a utilitarian lens.

We in the West don’t usually ask deep, philosophical questions about nature but non-western cultures, particularly indigenous communities, have developed a deeper understanding of the human-nature relationship over generations. For example, drawing from his cultural thought, Bolivian president has called for an International Court of Climate Justice and Mother Earth in the run up to the Conference of Parties (COP21) in Paris later this year.

Another reason for our failure is that no one in the UK knows how to do politics without economic growth; even Green Party is struggling here.

However, there are rays of hope, at least outside the UK. For instance, we can see an incredible surge of renewable innovation around the world, especially in Africa, South America, the Middle East and South Asia. This renewable energy revolution is unstoppable although unfortunately Britain seems to be heading backwards.

Moreover, we can be somewhat optimistic about COP21 Paris, particularly because two big players – the US and China – are stitching things up for good.

Turning to sustainability in higher education, universities have a binding, moral obligation to ensure that their graduates understand climate change and that they are capable of dealing with its challenges.

How are UK universities doing? Most are doing well in Estates and in their respective local communities. However, their performance is not equally satisfactory in their core business, i.e. Teaching and Research.

One reason is that universities are odd organisms. In a company, when CEO embraces sustainability, he or she can use their influence to get all aboard. In a university, however, although the vice chancellor looks equivalent to the CEO in a company, he or she would not be able to use the normal levers to drive the sustainability agenda in their institution. In universities, the command and control approach simply would not work and innovation is the way forward.

What can universities do? There are many opportunities to engage the university community with sustainability, particularly students. For instance, induction can be used to engage the news students with the environment agenda. Another is getting students excited about green innovation.

However, universities should first act as good examples. That’s why divestment (i.e. getting investment out of fossil fuels) is so important. Stepping beyond that, as the National Union of Students (NUS) advocates, what should follow divestment is socially responsible investment in, say renewable energy. Here, a wonderful motivator for universities is RE100, which is a global initiative that engages, supports and showcases influential companies committed to using 100% renewable power. In short, divest from bad stuff and invest in good stuff.

Sustainability can be built into any subject, says Professor Bailey

Having started at LSBU last year, I am initially engaged in somewhat ‘superficial’ projects, still signposting the way. Those who come to our university should get a sense that we are taking care of what is around us.

On making a university more sustainable, my advice is, start doing things that are relevant to different parts of the university instead of going for one big drive for making the university more sustainable. Three to four projects a year would be good.

Embedding sustainability in the curriculum is much more challenging but is possible because sustainability can be built into any subject. However, it is a long term project.

A university is a community, mainly comprising students and staff. So our students are not our customers. Finding the right ways to engage the student body with sustainability is critical for making a university more sustainable.
