By Asitha Jayawardena (https://www.linkedin.com/today/author/asithaj) as part of his Sustainable University One-stop Shop Experiment (http://www.sustainableuni.kk5.org/).

The SDG Accord, a pioneering global initiative to embed Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) across post-16 education, was launched on 9 September 2017 at the 9th World Congress on Environmental Education (WEEC) in Vancouver, Canada.

Facilitated by the Environmental Association for Universities and Colleges (EAUC), the SDG Accord is the collective response of the higher and further education sectors’ collective response to the SDGs, reflecting education key role in moulding a new generation that can and will strike a balance between people, planet and prosperity.

The Accord aims to inspire, celebrate and advance the embedding of the SD goals in post-16 institutions through education, research, leadership, operations, administration and engagement activities.

It will also commit institutions to share the learning they accrue on the topic with one other nationally and internationally and to annually report on their progress. A sector overview of progress will then be presented annually at UN High Level Political Forum’s global progress review.

“The premise of the Goals is simple: there must be economic, social and environmental balance. Delivery has never been straightforward – but this SDG Accord will now help pave the way for holistic change,” says Iain Patton, Chief Executive of the EAUC. “Institutions that sign up to the accord will embed the goals in every department and collaborate across cities, regions, countries and continents. This is the beginning of a total global transformation.”

“The Sustainable Development Goals offer a clear and common agenda for humanity and places the onus on higher- and further education ecosystems to respond with urgency and action to meet and exceed the goals,” says John North, Managing Director at Globally Responsible Leadership Initiative. “The SDG Accord is an important awareness raising and activation platform for catalysing global responsibility in living, learning and leading.”

The SDG Accord has already been endorsed by 30 supporting organisations from around the world, including:

  • World Environmental Education Congress (WEEC) Network
  • Globally Responsible Leadership Initiative
  • Society for the Environment, UK
  • Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE), US
  • Campus Responsables, France
  • Australasian Campuses Towards Sustainability, Australia
  • China Green University Network, China

LSBU and RCE London host European RCE Meeting 2016

eurorcemeeting-postevent

The European RCE Meeting 2016 (#RCELondon2016) took place at London South Bank University (LSBU) on 23-24 June 2016.

Hosted by LSBU and the London Regional Centre of Expertise (RCE) on Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), this two day event was attended by nearly 50 participants and most were representatives from 17 RCEs across Europe, which are part of the global RCE network of the United Nations University.

The first day of the meeting began with a brief outline by Professor Ros Wade (Chair, RCE London) and Professor Pat Bailey (Deputy Vice Chancellor and Sustainability Lead at LSBU) welcomed the participants to LSBU.

During the day, the participants focused on finding synergies in the European RCE community and on tackling thematic challenges under the current policy frameworks COP21, SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) and TTIP. Moreover, they strived to identify the roles that RCEs can play in the GAP (Global Action Programme on ESD) and SDGs while exploring opportunities for collaboration within RCEs and beyond. They also considered the challenges that lie ahead.

In the meantime, they did not forget to share and celebrate the excellent work that European RCEs are doing across the continent, sometimes with non-European partners.

Among the key elements of the first day’s programme were:

  • Setting the global context – Implications for RCEs | Dr Hugh Atkinson (Schumacher Institute of Sustainable Solutions)
  • Poster session: RCEs – state of the art: What is going on in Europe?
  • Report back from visit to UNESCO | Dr Jaya Gajparia (LSBU)
  • Working groups (world café) on key issues and GAP/ SDG priority areas
  • Transition Town Movement: linking local communities, local action with global issues | Hilary Jennings (Transition Town Movement)
  • Workshop: Skills for ESD | Dr Glenn Strachan (LSBU) and Betsy King

Day Two, with a focus on celebrating Refugee Week, mainly comprised a workshop and discussion forum on the issue of migration and refugees and implications for the role of RCEs. A draft position paper ‘Education as a Tool for Responding European Refugee Crisis’ prepared by Dr Pinar Guner (LSBU) was discussed by the participants.

Among the key elements of the second day’s programme were:

  • Refugee Stories | Alia Alzougbi (HEC Global Learning Centre, London)
  • Key points from and purpose of the draft position paper for RCEs | Dr Pinar Guner (LSBU) (Resource person: Professor Gaim Kibreab, LSBU)
  • Group Discussion: What is the role for RCEs? | Facilitators: Ros Wade and Lynn Vickery
  • Preparation for the next Global RCE Conference | Facilitators: Lynn Vickery and Hugh Atkinson

A report of the meeting was sent for dissemination by the RCE Service Centre.

The next European RCE meeting will be hosted by RCE Dortmund in Germany in 2018.

Gloucestershire holds event on Student Experience with EfS – with Plymouth, UEA & Wales TSD as guests

BIG-PostE-UoG-EfS-seminar-150610-MAIN

The University of Gloucestershire (UoG) held its annual Education for Sustainability (EfS) event on 10 June 2015. Titled ‘Raising the Stakes in the Student Experience with EfS’, the event took place as part of the university’s Festivals Fortnight.

This annual event series is the flagship of the university’s Learning for Sustainable Futures Scheme (LSFS). Launched in 2012 as part of the university’s approach to enhancing the quality of learning and teaching across all subject areas, the LSFS is a collaborative initiative between the university’s Sustainability Team and the Academic Development Unit. Through an annual call for project proposals, this scheme provides staff with grants to lead and develop new projects to embed EfS approaches into the curriculum and student learning experiences.

The day started with a welcome by Maureen McLaughlin (Dean of Quality and Standards, UoG).

In her address, titled ‘Promising Futures: 7 Years of Innovation and Change at UoG’, Professor Daniella Tilbury (Dean of Sustainability, UoG) noted that the EfS agenda is moving in the right direction, slowly but steadily and there are many opportunities for EfS action than ever before. She said that the culture of EfS has been embedded in different part of the university in different ways and a learning process is taking place. Although there is much to celebrate, there remains a lot more to be done, she noted.

Speaking on ‘Sustainability and the Student Experience’, Jamie Agombar (Head of Sustainability, National Union of Students NUS) revealed that the fifth HEA-NUS survey on students’ attitude towards sustainable development (which is yet to be published) is indicative of the same positive trend of students preferring sustainability to be embedded in their courses. He also outlined the work of Students Green Fund and Responsible Futures.

The session on welcome and introductions ended with outlining of the event themes by Dr Alex Ryan (Associate Director of Sustainability, UoG) and Professor Sharon Turnbull (Leadership Trust), master of the ceremony.

The programme comprised three main sessions. In two of them, the leaders of the LSFS projects shared their work in areas such as Accountancy, Fine Art, Business, Fashion, Product Design, Sports Placements, Tourism and Libraries.

Session: New EfS pathways for student learning:
• Future Professionals and EfS: Nurturing Responsible Accountants (Michelle Cook, Business School)
• Supporting Sustainability Literacy and Learning through Library Services (Allison Davis, LIS)
• The 2020 Curriculum: Reframing Business Learning Priorities (Colin Simpson, Business School)
• Powerful Placements for Sustainability Skills (Phil Shirfield, School of Sport and Exercise)

SAMSUNG DIGITAL CAMERA

Session: Reshaping the curriculum with EfS:
• Fashion Futures: Designing new Curricula with EfS (Margaret McDonough, School of Art and Design)
• Engaged Citizens: Creating the Future through Fine Art (Katie Pratt, School of Art and Design)
• Designing Sustainable Futures (Michelle Williams, School of Computing and Technology)
• Curriculum for Responsible Tourism Professionals (Angela Kalisch & Richard Harper, School of Leisure)

SAMSUNG DIGITAL CAMERA

In the third main session, a panel comprising guests from three other universities and UoG Student Union’s Greener Gloucestershire team (see main photograph) shared new ideas and initiatives on engaging students in sustainability. At its end, Professor Stephen Marston (Vice-Chancellor UoG) remarked on student sustainability journeys at UoG.

Session: Changing the game for students – institutional innovations
• Students Workbook at UEA (Professor Tim O’Riordan, University of East Anglia)
• Student Experience at TSD (Dr Carolyn Hayles, University of Wales Trinity St David)
• Student Initiatives at Plymouth (Professor Stephen Sterling, Plymouth University)
• Greener Gloucestershire & EfS (Rachel Purdon, Jenny Barnes & Meg Baker, UoG)

The day’s programme came to an end with a discussion group session on Graduates’ Future Horizons.

The workshop was Professor Tilbury’s last EfS event at UoG before leaving the university at the end of June, to take up the post of vice chancellor at the newly established University of Gibraltar in September 2015.

Gloucestershire to hold event on Student Experience with Education for Sustainability (EfS)

BIG-UoG-EfS-seminar-10Jun2015

The annual Education for Sustainability (EfS) event of the University of Gloucestershire (UoG) will be held at the University’s Park Campus on 10 June 2015.

This year’s event, titled ‘Raising the Stakes in the Student Experience with EfS’, is focusing on student experience as part of Festivals Fortnight.

At this event, the leaders of the LSFS projects will share their work in areas such as Accountancy, Fine Art, Business, Fashion, Product Design, Sports Placements, Tourism and Libraries.

Moreover, in an interactive panel discussion, guests from three other universities (Plymouth University, University of East Anglia and University of Wales Trinity St David) will join the UoG Student Union’s Greener Gloucestershire team to share new ideas and initiatives on engaging students in sustainability.

Surrey to host £6m int’l research centre | Centre for the Understanding of Sustainable Prosperity (CUSP)

BIG-CUSP-FULL

The University of Surrey has received a £6m research grant from the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) to establish a multi-disciplinary international research centre, called ‘The Centre for the Understanding of Sustainable Prosperity’ (CUSP). Among this Centre’s other academic partners are five UK universities (Anglia Ruskin, Keele, Goldsmiths College London, Leeds and Middlesex) and two universities from Canada (York) and New Zealand (Canterbury).

Led by Professor Tim Jackson and working in collaboration with a variety of academic and non-academic partners, CUSP will launch a five-year multidisciplinary research programme in January 2016.

Vision, aim and the programme

CUSP will aim to explore the complex relationship between prosperity (our aspirations for the good life) and sustainability (the social and environmental constraints of a finite planet). As Professor Jackson puts it, “Our guiding vision for sustainable prosperity is one in which people everywhere have the capability to flourish as human beings – within the ‘safe operating space’ of a finite planet. CUSP’s work will be to elaborate that vision, test its viability and explore its social and economic implications.”

Thus, CUSP will explore not just the economic aspects of sustainable prosperity, but also its social, political and philosophical dimensions. It will address the implications of sustainable prosperity at the level of households and firms and will explore sector-level and macro-economic implications of different pathways to prosperity. It will pay particular attention to the pragmatic steps that enterprise, government and civil society should take in order to achieve a sustainable prosperity.

Themes

The CUSP work programme comprises five themes (‘MAPSS’ framework):
• Theme M explores the moral framing and contested meanings of prosperity itself.
• Theme A explores the role of the arts and of culture in our society
• Theme P addresses the politics of sustainable prosperity and explores the institutional shifts that will be needed to achieve it.
• Theme S1 explores the social and psychological dimensions of prosperity.
• Theme S2 examines the complex dynamics of social and economic systems on which sustainable prosperity depends.

Partners

Spanning numerous academic disciplines, the Centre will take the form of an international network, drawing together expert partners from academic and non-academic institutions as co-producers of the work programme.

The academic partners include:
UK:
University of Surrey (Prof Tim Jackson, Dr Kate Burningham, Ian Christie, Dr Angela Druckman, Dr Birgitta Gatersleben)
Anglia Ruskin University (Dr Aled Jones)
Keele University (Prof Andy Dobson)
Goldsmiths College London (Dr Will Davies)
University of Leeds (Prof Kate Oakley)
Middlesex University (Prof Fergus Lyon)
Canada: York University (Prof Peter Victor)
New Zealand: University of Canterbury (Prof Bronwyn Hayward)

Among CUSP’s non-academic partners are the Aldersgate Group and the UN Environment Programme (UNEP). The Aldersgate Group, an alliance of leaders from business, politics and society that drives action for a sustainable economy, will formally be co-investigators on the project, establishing a vital link to industry and policy. As part of Theme S1, CUSP will engage with UNEP in a major study of young people’s lifestyles across the world. Other partnerships include a wide range of business and cultural organisations.

This collaboration will be widened further through an international network of CUSP Fellows hailing from a variety of academic and non-academic institutions.

Engagement

As part of its exploration of practical actions and proposition of supportive policies, CUSP will engage with business, government and civil society.

In order to engage a wide-range of stakeholders in debate and foster practical innovations in pursuit of sustainable prosperity, the Centre will develop an international Sustainable Prosperity Dialogue, to be chaired by Dr Rowan Williams, former Archbishop of Canterbury and Master of Magdalene College, Cambridge.
