Education for Sustainability (EfS) | Pioneering LSBU course celebrates 21st anniversary

Is the education that we are providing adequate to face the challenges that we are facing today? asked Professor Stephen Sterling (Professor of Sustainability Education at the Centre for Sustainable Futures, Plymouth University) in his keynote speech at the 21st anniversary celebratory conference of the EfS programme at London South Bank University (LSBU) held at LSBU on 13 January 2017.

 

Titled ‘Celebrating 21 Years of EfS: Moving forward in an age of global uncertainty’, the event brought together academics, students, alumni and practitioners, who collectively reflected on the impact of EfS and looked forward to future developments in this important field of education.

 

The programme featured a keynote, talks, panel discussions, workshops, stories from current students and alumni of the course, a poster exhibition and a celebratory reception.

Welcome

 

Welcoming the participants, Professor Patrick Bailey (Deputy Vice Chancellor LSBU) highlighted that sustainability is so complex that no single area of expertise can solve the wicked problems associated with it, emphasising the need for an interdisciplinary approach.

 

He said that it is social justice that needs to be at the heart of sustainability, so that everything else would follow, even environmental protection.

 

He revealed that he doesn’t believe in climate change because it is not a religion and that, like himself, we all should become climate change critics. He said that there is 98% certainty that climate change is happening and 95% certainty that it is human-driven and warned that the consequences of not taking this clear evidence into account would be very serious.

 

He congratulated the outgoing course director, Professor Ros Wade, who had been at the helm of the course for the last 21 years from the very beginning.

 

Introduction

 

Dr Jaya Gajparia, the new director of the EfS programme, gave an overview of the course.

 

She said that the EfS course, which offers postgraduate courses from Continued Professional Development (CPD) to Masters level with a range of flexible study modes, including distance learning, spans the theory and practice of EfS, enabling students to explore and expand the role that EfS can play in educational, social, political and economic change.

 

She also said that the course, which is designed for anyone interested in paving the way for a more sustainable world by way of understanding, educating or promoting sustainability, comprises six modules, with case studies and readings from a range of global regions; they are designed to be applicable to any type of educational or country context.

 

Moreover, she talked about the roots of the course, which lie the 1992 UN Earth Summit in Rio, Brazil, where a commitment was made to integrate environmental and development concerns in the emerging concept of sustainability while emphasising the importance of education’s role in building a sustainable world. In response to this, she said, a group of development and environmental organisations – with the financial contributions from WWF-UK, Oxfam and the EU – got together with LSBU and the eventual result was this EfS programme.

 

Finally, she observed that, over the last 21 years, the world’s first ever Masters programme of this kind has continued to grow steadily as a dynamic interface between theory and practice in EfS, with students and alumni from all continents – except Antarctica!

The panels discussion was on ‘Reflections on the past, planning for the future.’

 

The panel, chaired by Professor Stephen Sterling (Plymouth University), comprised Professor Ros Wade (LSBU), Dr Paul Vare (University of Gloucestershire), Betty Okot (Alumni from Uganda/ Keele University), Safia Minney (People Tree) and Professor Craig Barker (LSBU). The panellists answered the chair’s questions and then, in the end, questions from the audience.

 

Professor Ros Wade, outgoing course director, observed that this EfS course has been a collaboration from the very beginning – between environmental and development educators, between academia and NGOs and so on.

 

She said that EfS not being a fixed discipline or field, the course has been developed in line with solving real world problems, based mainly on practice, enabling students to explore and expand the role of EfS in their own personal and professional journeys.

 

To her, transformatory aspect is key to the course although which brings in tensions, such as allowing for transformation, emergence, openness and originality vs. learning outcomes.

 

She revealed that it was people who made the course a resounding success, especially the students.

 

She also mentioned Journeys around Education for Sustainability, the book that the course published in 2008 from the work of the course participants and directors.

 

Betty Okot (Keele University), an alumna from Uganda, talked about how the EfS course made her a confident agent of change, elaborating on her work in making positive change in community policing in Uganda.

 

Dr Paul Vare (University of Gloucestershire) emphasised that the economic goal is too narrow for education and that critical thinking should play a key role of education.

 

Safia Minney (founder of People Tree) suggested that more pressure should be exerted on governments and corporations to battle modern slavery and that the movie ‘True Cost’ should be shown to teachers.

 

Professor Craig Barker (Dean, School of Law and Social Sciences, LSBU) said that many countries takes responsibility seriously but international law is constrained by political will.

The session on the impact of the course was chaired by Dr Glenn Strachan (LSBU), who himself was a student on the course and then a co-director.

 

Students and alumni from Lesotho, Rwanda, UK and Cameroon (on Skype) shared their stories. The course has helped them in different ways, including:

  • Enhancing thinking and practice
  • To become what one wanted to be (now this student wants help others to become what they want to be)
  • To look deeply into the alternatives to the mainstream
  • To effect personal change for good in their own life and space
  • To become confident and effective agents of change

James Whittingham (Sustainability Manager at LSBU) outlined the university’s 3C-framework that drives sustainability change by addressing both hearts and minds of the LSBU community; the framework comprises campus, curriculum and community.

A parallel session comprised two workshops and an exhibition:

‘Whole Earth?’ exhibition, launched in autumn 2015 at the Eden Project, is hosted by universities and schools in the UK and Scandinavia. It is a partnership between Hard Rain Project, the National Union of Students (NUS) and the Environmental the Association of Universities and Colleges (EAUC).

Two representatives from the UK Commonwealth Scholarship Commission, which funds the African Scholarship programme of the course, outlined its contribution to sustainable development and empowerment through its scholarship scheme.

 

The RCE movement and Education for Sustainability (EfS)

Professor Ros Wade (Chair, London Regional Centre of Expertise RCE in Education for Sustainable Development ESD) revealed how the existence of the course at LSBU was instrumental in the development of LSBU as the host of the RCE London, which is part of the UN University’s global RCE network. She drew attention to the European RCE meeting 2016 that RCE London and LSBU hosted in June last year.

 

Keynote | Future challenges for EfS

What’s wrong with education today? Is the education that we are providing adequate to face the challenges that we are facing today? asked Professor Stephen Sterling, delivering the keynote on the future challenges for EfS.

 

Today, conventional knowledge is not adequate, he observed, emphasising that extraordinary times require extraordinary responses. He viewed the birth of this course as an example of such an extraordinary response from environmental and development education communities.

 

Good education should enable us to question assumptions, including our own, as this course encourages its students to do so, he said.

 

Future challenges for EfS are numerous, he said, taking tension as an example, between fragmentation and integration. Other challenges that he had mentioned include staying within fixed boundaries, issues related to labels and identities and obtaining better co-evaluation with society.

 

Although much more needs to be done, what EfS/ ESD (Education for Sustainable Development) has achieved in the last couple of decades is phenomenal, he observed. For instance, he said, in the 1990s EfS/ ESD was almost non-existent but today it enjoys global influence at the UN level.

Celebrating 21 years of Education for Sustainability (EfS) at London South Bank University (LSBU)

The 21st anniversary celebratory conference of the Education for Sustainability MSc programme at London South Bank University (LSBU) will take place at LSBU’s Clarence Centre for Enterprise and Innovation (SE1 6FE) on 13 January 2017 from 9.30am to 6 pm.

 

This free event will celebrate 21 years of Education for Sustainability MSc at LSBU, reflecting on the impact of EfS and looking forward to future developments in this important field of education.

 

It will feature a keynote, talks, panel discussions, workshops, stories from current students and alumni, a poster exhibition and a celebratory reception.

Professor Stephen Sterling, Professor of Sustainability Education at the Centre for Sustainable Futures, Plymouth University, will deliver the keynote speech on the importance of Education for Sustainability (EfS) work in an age of global uncertainty. A former Senior Advisor to the UK Higher Education Academy on Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), and a National Teaching Fellow, Professor Sterling has worked in environmental and sustainability education in the academic and NGO fields nationally and internationally for over three decades, including as a consultant and advisor on UNESCO’S ESD programmes.

 

Safia Minney, the founder of People Tree, will speak to us about her work, the challenges and barriers we face today and the role of education in creating social change. Well-known in the Fair Trade movement, Safia is recognised internationally as the pioneer of sustainable fashion and as an Outstanding Social Entrepreneur by the World Economic Forum. Safia launched Global Village in 1991 in Japan, out of which People Tree was born, and then in London in 2000.  People Tree was the world’s first fashion company to achieve organic and Fair Trade certification.

 

Naomi Namara Karekaho, an alumna from Uganda, will share the impact of EfS in her work at the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) in Uganda. She has 14 years of experience in the communication and education sectors is currently the Corporate Communications Manager at the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA), a public institution that uses information to empower Uganda’s public to actively and proactively participate in the utilisation of the country’s natural resources to ensure social and economic freedom.

Designed for anyone interested in paving the way for a more sustainable world by way of understanding, educating or promoting sustainability, the Education for Sustainability (EfS) programme at LSBU offers postgraduate courses from Continued Professional Development to Masters level with a range of flexible study modes, including distance learning. It deals with the theory and practice of EfS, enabling students to explore and expand the role that EfS can play in educational, social, political and economic change.

For example, its existence at LSBU has been instrumental in the development of LSBU as the host of a United Nations Regional Centre of Expertise (RCE) in Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), namely the RCE London.

Prosperity and Growth | Church House and Parliament to host two events in London on 28 November

The Church House and the House of Commons will host two events – a dialogue on The Nature of Prosperity and a debate titled ‘The End of Growth’ – in London on 28 November 2016.

 

Event 1 | Nature of Prosperity Dialogue: The Audacity of Hope

 

The first event, the Nature of Prosperity Dialogue: The Audacity of Hope, will take place at the Church House, Westminster, London SW1P 3NZ on 28 November 2016 from 1.30 to 5.30pm.

 

This is the second of the series of dialogues on the Nature of Prosperity, organised by the Centre for the Understanding of Sustainable Prosperity (CUSP). The first event was held in May 2016.

 

This second event will comprise two keynotes:

  • The Audacity of Hope | Baron Rowan Williams, chair of the dialogues
  • Reinventing prosperity | Professor Jørgen Randers (co-author of the 1972 Limits to Growth study) and Dr Graeme Maxton (Secretary General of the Club of Rome)

 

In his keynote Baron Rowan Williams will set out his own vision for a lasting and inclusive prosperity, particularly reflecting on the role of hope in a changing and uncertain world.

 

Professor Jørgen Randers and Dr Graeme Maxton will present their new book Reinventing Prosperity, which outlines “thirteen politically feasible proposals to improve our world”. You can read Its first chapter can be accessed on the Club of Rome website free of charge (see link below this post).

 

Dr Camilla Toulmin (Chair CUSP Advisory Board; Professor in Practice, Lancaster Environment Centre, Lancaster University; and Senior Fellow, Climate Change, International Institute for Environment and Development IIED) will facilitate the subsequent discussion sessions.

 

Professor Tim Jackson (CUSP Director and Professor of Sustainable Development, University of Surrey) will deliver the welcome and introduction and the closing remarks.

 

The event will also feature an exhibition titled ‘A dream of a low carbon future’ during the refreshments and will end with a book signing with drinks reception.

The Nature of Prosperity series of public debates, hosted by CUSP, engages young and old alike across business, policy and civil society in perhaps the biggest question of our time: What does prosperity mean in a world of environmental and social limits?

 

The inaugural event was held at the same venue on 23 May 2016.

Event 2 | The End of Growth? Debate

 

The second event, a debate titled ‘The End of Growth?’ will take place in the House of Commons in London on 28 November 2016 from 6.30 to 8.30pm.

 

Hosted by the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Limits to Growth, this debate will focus on this question:

In a world of environmental and social limits, is there still a role for economic growth in delivering a sustainable prosperity?

 

The panel will comprise:

  • Federico Demaria (co-editor of Degrowth – A vocabulary for a new era)
  • Dr Graeme Maxton (Secretary General of the Club of Rome)
  • Professor Jørgen Randers (co-author of the 1972 Limits to Growth study)
  • Kate Raworth (author of Doughnut Economics: seven ways to think like a 21st century economist)

 

The debate will be chaired by Caroline Lucas, MP.

 

The All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Limits to Growth aims to provide a new platform for cross-party dialogue on economic growth in a time of environmental and social transition. It is chaired by Caroline Lucas MP (Green) and co-chaired by George Kerevan MP (SNP) and Daniel Zeichner MP (Labour).

Public engagement could be an effective way of promoting policymakers’ uptake of sustainability research findings, said several speakers in the annual conference of Newcastle University’s Institute for Sustainability (IfS) held in London on 8 November 2016.

 

Titled ‘Sustainable Futures: Research, Policy and Practice’, this annual event focused on research, policy and practice that would help achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), exploring the challenges in sustainability research at a range of scales – regional, national and international – with a view of  enhancing collaboration among academia, industry, policy and the public.

 

The day’s programme comprised:

  • Welcome by Professor Phil Taylor (Director, Institute for Sustainability, Newcastle University)
  • Keynote: Universities and the UN 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda by Professor Patrick Paul Walsh (University College Dublin and Senior Advisor to the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network SDSN)
  • Session 1: What is the role of academia in helping to meet the SDGs and where should they have input in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development?
  • A poster session (during lunch) on Newcastle University’s sustainability research projects
  • Session 2: Addressing global challenges with integrated solutions
  • Session 3: How to bring research to policy for sustainable development

 

 

Welcome to Sustainable Futures…

 

Welcoming the participants to the dizzy heights of the 32nd floor of the building, Professor Phil Taylor (Director, Institute for Sustainability, Newcastle University), provided an overview of the event, including its aim: To explore ways academic research in sustainability can inform policy and practice for the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), driving forward the 2030 Agenda, and to enhance collaboration between key actors in academia, civil society, industry and policy for achieving the SDGs.

 

He also outlined the work of the university’s Institute of Sustainability (IfS), which connects academia with industry and policymakers in the context of sustainability research.

 

Sustainability is one of the three societal challenge themes that the university is pursuing as part of its overall focus on research excellence with impact and the other two themes are Aging and Social Renewal. The IfS works on three research challenges: Integrated infrastructure systems, Production and resources, and Consumption and waste.

 

These three challenges are underpinned by the concept of Justice and Governance, which sits at the centre of the work of the institute. It is planning to add Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation as an overarching theme next year.

 

The institute’s research addresses the SDGs by developing integrated approaches to energy, food, transport and water infrastructure. Notable among its research highlights is the Science Central and improving the sustainability of utilities in India in collaboration with Enzen Global Ltd.

 

Keynote | Universities and the UN 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda

Professor Patrick Paul Walsh (University College Dublin and Senior Advisor to the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network SDSN) delivered the keynote address on Universities and the UN 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda.

 

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development are universal and indivisible. They call for action by all countries and all people and active participation of all section of society is needed. Because they are linked to one another, an integrated approach is needed; working in disciplinary silos or cherry-picking would not work.

 

In a way it is a miracle that 193 nations agreed on the 2030 Agenda in September 2015. It is not binding but a moral agreement for the 21st century, penned in a common language for all. There is a growing consensus among the UN member states of the urgent need to act on the SDGs.

 

This agenda will pave the way for governments, the private sector, civil society and other stakeholders to act to end poverty and build a more sustainable world over the next 15 years for all people. Achieving this agenda will ensure a life of dignity for all and build greater shared prosperity so it is in everyone’s interest.

 

Universities have a key role to play in achieving SDGs. They have a variety of means to contribute to this agenda, such as through a holistic approach to sustainable development research, the United Nations Academic Impact (UNAI), electives for undergraduates, Technology Facilitation Mechanism (TFM), e-discussions and consultations, Global Sustainable Development Report (GSDR) policy briefs, and volunteering and internships.

 

Another way to advance this is through the SDG Academy (formerly known as SDSNedu), which is an online education initiative of the Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) that provides high-quality, mass online education in the field of sustainable development.

 

 

Session 1 | Academic researchers’ role in the SDGs and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development

Session 1, chaired by Professor Phil Taylor, focused on the role of academic researchers in helping to meet the SDGs and where they should have input into the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. It explored how academic research could play a greater role in policy and practice for sustainable development

 

It featured four speakers:

  • Sue Riddlestone OBE (Chief Executive and co-founder, Bioregional)
  • Dr Ruth Fuller (International Development Policy Advisor, WWF-UK)
  • Jenny Saunders OBE (Chief Executive, National Energy Action NEA)
  • Dr Lucilla Spini (Head of Science Programmes, International Council for Science ICSU)

 

The subsequent Q&A panel comprised the four speakers and the keynote speaker.

 

 

Session 2 | Addressing global challenges with integrated solutions

Session 2, chaired by Dr Sara Walker, was on addressing global sustainability challenges with integrated solutions and it introduced research from Newcastle University researchers.

 

It comprised six presentations:

  • Energy: How do we reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the energy sector? Prof Phil Taylor (Newcastle University NU) and Dale Geach (Siemens)
  • Climate adaptation in cities: How do we adapt urban populations to climate change?  Dr Alistair Ford (NU), Prof Hayley Fowler (NU) and Andy Mace (ARUP)
  • Sustainable Buildings: How do we make our buildings more sustainable for present and future generations? Dr Sara Walker (NU) and Louisa Bowles (Hawkins\Brown)
  • Air quality & transport: What policies and actions are needed to drastically reduce transport emissions to protect public health? Dr Uma Rajarathnam (Enzen Global Ltd) and Dr Paul Goodman (NU)
  • Food & resources: How do we prevent essential resources in agriculture going to waste? Professor Carlo Leifert (NU) and Dr Wendy Wreiden (NU)
  • Wastewater: How do we make wastewater treatment sustainable? Dr Adam Jarvis (NU)

 

 

Session 3 | Bringing research to policy for the SDGs

Session 3, chaired by Dr Philip McGowan (Newcastle University NU), explored how to bring research to policy for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), bringing together experts in research, policy and practice to identify how academic research and demonstration can inform policy for sustainable development.

 

The panel comprised Professor Patrick Paul Walsh ((University College Dublin and UN SDSN), Dr Graham Long (NU) Professor Phil Blythe (Department of Transport), Sue Riddlestone (Bioregional), Dr Lucilla Spini (ICSU), Dr Ruth Fuller (WWF), Dr Uma Rajarathnam (Enzen Global Ltd) and Dr Paul Goodman (NU).

 

The following is a selection of highlights based on the panellists’ responses to the questions by the audience.

 

Dr Rajarathnam emphasised the significance of communications and stakeholder engagement in any endeavour of advancing the SDG agenda. Dr Spini said that many academics and researchers who are not directly related to sustainability were already working on areas similar to the SDGs but they were not aware of that. She suggested that sustainability researchers should increase awareness creation on the SDGs. Professor Walsh was of the view that academia should take the lead in taking SDG Science to the private sector, demonstrating businesses its win-win potential to all.

 

Within the broader communication and engagement sphere, engagement of policymakers received special attention. Professor Blythe stated that researchers should understand the context when communicating with policymakers, who are not research experts. He emphasised that they would like to have information that they could easily process. Based on her experience in India, Dr Rajarathnam advised that academics should go to the policymakers with solutions to specific problems instead of mere research results.

 

Echoing the suggestion by Jenny Saunders (NEA) in Session 1, that is, academia could engage civil society as an effective way of influencing policymakers, Dr Spini said that sustainability researchers should raise policymakers’ attention level through public engagement of the SDGs. Professor Walsh said that raising the level of public understanding of the benefits of the SDGs will certainly put huge pressure on politicians to act more intensively to achieve the SDGs.

 

As a solution to the problem that academics and researchers encounter when they present complicated research findings to politicians, Dr Spini believed that they should seek help of a translator or broker to take a simplified message through more effective media such as a film. But she said still the complicated messages should be communicated to film directors, who are again non-specialists in this area. However, she gave an example of such a science ‘translator/broker’ in London – SciDev.Net.

 

Dr Ruth Fuller observed that achieving the SDGs requires extensive behaviour changes among people. Turning to education for sustainability, she revealed that values underpin our behaviour, so shifting the values would be the key to generating pro-sustainability behaviour.

 

Praising the convening power of the IfS, Dr Spini asked the institute to play a leadership role, by rallying round other stakeholders in higher education and beyond around the SDG Agenda.

The Nature of Prosperity | Dr Rowan Williams, Satish Kumar and others in conversation in London on 23 May

An event, titled ‘The Nature of Prosperity,’ will take place in London (Central Hall Westminster, Storey’s Gate, London, SW1H 9NH) on 23 May 2016 from 14:30 to 18:30.

 

Hosted by the Centre for the Understanding of Sustainable Prosperity (CUSP), this event is the first in a series of public debates on the nature of prosperity. It will bring together academia, business, policy and civil society in exploration of one of the most vital questions today: What does prosperity mean in a world of environmental and social limits?

 

The event also marks the launch of CUSP, a project funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC).

 

The event features Dr Rowan Williams (the former Archbishop of Canterbury) in conversation with long-time peace and environmental activist Satish Kumar. Other speakers include: Jane Elliott (Chief Executive of the ESRC), Karen Hamilton (Global Vice President Sustainable Business, Unilever), Tim Jackson (Director of CUSP) and Caroline Lucas (MP and Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Limits to Growth).

 

CUSP, a multi-disciplinary centre led by the University of Surrey, has an overall aim of exploring the economic, ecological, social and governance dimensions of sustainable prosperity and of making concrete recommendations to government, business and civil society in pursuit of it. Its guiding vision for sustainable prosperity is one in which people everywhere have the capability to flourish as human beings – within the ecological and resource constraints of a finite planet.

Higher Education’s Commitment to Sustainability: a UN global report

Higher Education’s Commitment to Sustainability: From Understanding to Action, a UN-commissioned global report on Higher Education for Sustainability, was released recently. The report, fourth in a series published by the Global Universities Network for Innovation (GUNI) in collaboration with the United Nations University, includes papers by 85 authors from 38 countries.

Professor Daniella Tilbury of the University of Gloucestershire has authored the initial chapter, Higher Education for Sustainability: A Global Overview of Commitment and Progress.
