Global Goals: Local Action | SDGs to reign at EAUC Conference 2017

big-eaucconf2017

Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) will reign in the 21st annual conference of The Environmental Association for Universities and Colleges (EAUC) at Lancaster University on 28-30 March 2017.

This year’s theme, ‘Global Goals: Local Action,’ recognises the critical role that universities and colleges have to play in confronting climate change and realising the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs/Global Goals) on a local level within their communities.

This three-day event will bring together delegates from all areas – environmental management, estates and facilities, finance and procurement as well as curriculum leaders and students – from further and higher education sector.

The programme features several keynotes and plenary sessions; six interactive workshop sessions, amounting to 36 workshops; facilitated networking events; the Conference Dinner and the Exhibition.

“The SDGs are the world’s new to-do list and this conference will inspire and empower universities and colleges to take the step-change needed,” says Iain Patton (CEO EAUC) on the conference website. “Our students and their learning are instrumental in delivering the Global Goals and shaping all our futures. Students have the commitment and energy, so it’s up to us in the lecture room and on the campus to ensure they leave our institutions with the knowledge and skills they need to become effective agents of global understanding and local action.”

Green Gown Awards 2016 | UWE, Royal Agricultural and Salford shine; Leadership Award to Prof Longhurst

big-greengowns2016

The ceremony of the Green Gown Awards 2016 of the Environmental Association for Universities and Colleges (EAUC) took place in Leicester on 10 November 2016, in partnership with De Montfort University (DMU) and the University of Leicester.

This annual awards scheme, launched in 2004, celebrates the sustainability initiatives of universities and colleges and the learning and skills sectors across the UK and Ireland.

This twelfth awards, hosted by Mike Barry (Director of Sustainable Business, Marks and Spencer), featured 21 Winners and 26 Highly Commended from a pool of 115 finalists representing 1.5 million students and 240,000 staff.

The biggest winners (including the individual awards) are the University of the West of England (UWE) (winner in 4 categories), Royal Agricultural University (winner in 2) and the University of Salford (winner in 2). The coveted Leadership Award went to Professor Jim Longhurst (Assistant Vice-Chancellor, Environment & Sustainability, University of the West of England UWE).

Emphasising the significance of the Awards, Iain Patton (Chief Executive, EAUC) said, “Every year the excellence recognised by the Green Gown Awards shows the business alignment and value of sustainability. Sustainability makes business sense and this year’s inspiring initiatives prove that sustainability benefits staff, students, the wider community and of course the bottom line.”

Host Mike Barry (Director of Sustainable Business, Marks & Spencer) observed, “We stand on the cusp of great change in the economy and society. It is no longer enough to be a ‘less bad organisation’ focused on preventing the worst environmental and social excesses. Every higher and further education establishment, business and government department needs to be thinking about how we change radically our approach to education, commerce and politics to create a future that is low carbon, equal, circular, fair, restorative and committed to the wellbeing of all. The Green Gown Awards help identify these sustainability best practices and encourage the wider higher and further education system to scale up their use.”

Referring to the Leadership Award winner Professor Jim Longhurst, his university’s vice chancellor Professor Steve West said, “UWE is committed to embedding sustainability in everything we do particularly within the curricula. The award of a Leadership Green Gown will be welcome external recognition of our efforts and, in particular, the excellent leadership role that Jim has played in our journey towards becoming a sustainable university.”

EAUC Conference 2016 at UWE in May | Role of education in creating healthier, happier cities

BIG-EAUC-Conf-2016

The 20th annual conference of The Environmental Association for Universities and Colleges (EAUC) will take place at the University of the West of England (UWE) in Bristol on 25-26 May 2016.

Taking into account the global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) adopted by the UN General Assembly in September 2015, the conference focuses on one goal, namely SDG11, which calls upon countries to make cities more inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable. The event will provide the delegates with an opportunity to explore the legacy of the host city Bristol’s European Green Capital Award 2015.

Titled ‘Learning and Legacy: The Role of Education in Creating Healthier, Happier Cities,’ the conference will explore the important role that universities and colleges can play in encouraging community cohesion, connecting stakeholders, driving social and business innovation and acting as a catalyst for change for building sustainable cities.

The conference will bring together delegates from the further and higher education sector, including those responsible for environmental management, estates and facilities, finance and procurement as well as curriculum leaders and students. It will comprise plenary sessions, interactive workshops, and facilitated networking events, a gala dinner and an exhibition.

The programme will feature a keynote panel session and three keynote addresses:

Keynote Panel Session | Bristol 2015

Chair: Professor Jim Longhurst (UWE) and Chris Willmore (University of Bristol)

Panellists (from Bristol 2015 European Green Capital and local businesses): Andrew Garrad, Gary Topp, Alan Bailey, Gem Heywood and Dr Georgina Gough

Keynote | A Challenging Journey: Driving Change for Tomorrow’s Leaders?

Mike Barry (Director of Sustainable Business, Marks and Spencer M&S)

Keynote | Community Connections: Striving for Full-Spectrum Sustainability in our Cities

David Orr (Paul Sears Distinguished Professor of Environmental Studies & Politics EMERITUS and Counsellor to the President, Oberlin College, Ohio, USA)

Keynote | A Bed-time Story

Mac Macartney (Founder, Embercombe)

The sessions are structured around the framework for Learning in Future Environments (LiFE), falling into four main ‘priority areas’:

  • Estates and Operations | Biodiversity, sustainable ICT, utilities, travel, transport, construction and renovation, resource efficiency and waste
  • Leadership and Governance | Leadership, staff engagement and human resources
  • Learning, Teaching and Research | Learning, teaching, student engagement, research (both sustainable research and research into sustainability)

Universities have an obligation to empower students to deal with climate change, says Porritt at LSBU

BIG-PorrittAtLSBU-posteventUniversities have a binding, moral obligation to ensure that their graduates not only understand the dynamics of climate change but also are capable of dealing with its challenges, said eminent environmentalist and writer Jonathon Porritt CBE at an event on 13 October 2015 hosted by London South Bank University (LSBU).

The event, titled ‘Higher Education No Longer Needs to Protect the Environment’, started with an introduction by Professor Patrick Bailey, Deputy Vice Chancellor LSBU.

Jonathon Porritt started with a spiritual tone, referring to recent Pope Francis statement on the importance of nature. Before moving to sustainability in higher education, he talked about a range of environmental and sustainability issues in the wider world.

His commentary was followed by a Q&A session, run by Professor Bailey and Andrea Smith, Ethical and Environmental Officer of the student union. The evening of discussion came to an end with a networking session with refreshments.

The write-up below has been crafted using what Jonathon Porritt and Professor Bailey said in the event.

Jonathon Porritt is Co-Founder of Forum for the Future, Chancellor of Keele University, former Chairman of the UK Sustainable Development Commission and former Director of Friends of the Earth.

Before joining LSBU as Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor Patrick Bailey was Pro Vice Chancellor Environment and Sustainability at Keele University and received the Leadership Award in Green Gown Awards 2014.

We should get students excited about green innovation, says Jonathon Porritt

Over the last several decades, the environment agenda has moved from a minority fringe to a majority viewpoint. However, what we can see today is all key global environmental indicators going in the wrong direction. Moreover, climate change, which is the most formidable challenge, overshadows other critical environmental issues, such as air pollution and ocean acidification.

A reason for our failure in the environmental front is how we see nature. Nature has intrinsic rights regardless of its value to human beings but we continue to look at it through a utilitarian lens.

We in the West don’t usually ask deep, philosophical questions about nature but non-western cultures, particularly indigenous communities, have developed a deeper understanding of the human-nature relationship over generations. For example, drawing from his cultural thought, Bolivian president has called for an International Court of Climate Justice and Mother Earth in the run up to the Conference of Parties (COP21) in Paris later this year.

Another reason for our failure is that no one in the UK knows how to do politics without economic growth; even Green Party is struggling here.

However, there are rays of hope, at least outside the UK. For instance, we can see an incredible surge of renewable innovation around the world, especially in Africa, South America, the Middle East and South Asia. This renewable energy revolution is unstoppable although unfortunately Britain seems to be heading backwards.

Moreover, we can be somewhat optimistic about COP21 Paris, particularly because two big players – the US and China – are stitching things up for good.

Turning to sustainability in higher education, universities have a binding, moral obligation to ensure that their graduates understand climate change and that they are capable of dealing with its challenges.

How are UK universities doing? Most are doing well in Estates and in their respective local communities. However, their performance is not equally satisfactory in their core business, i.e. Teaching and Research.

One reason is that universities are odd organisms. In a company, when CEO embraces sustainability, he or she can use their influence to get all aboard. In a university, however, although the vice chancellor looks equivalent to the CEO in a company, he or she would not be able to use the normal levers to drive the sustainability agenda in their institution. In universities, the command and control approach simply would not work and innovation is the way forward.

What can universities do? There are many opportunities to engage the university community with sustainability, particularly students. For instance, induction can be used to engage the news students with the environment agenda. Another is getting students excited about green innovation.

However, universities should first act as good examples. That’s why divestment (i.e. getting investment out of fossil fuels) is so important. Stepping beyond that, as the National Union of Students (NUS) advocates, what should follow divestment is socially responsible investment in, say renewable energy. Here, a wonderful motivator for universities is RE100, which is a global initiative that engages, supports and showcases influential companies committed to using 100% renewable power. In short, divest from bad stuff and invest in good stuff.

Sustainability can be built into any subject, says Professor Bailey

Having started at LSBU last year, I am initially engaged in somewhat ‘superficial’ projects, still signposting the way. Those who come to our university should get a sense that we are taking care of what is around us.

On making a university more sustainable, my advice is, start doing things that are relevant to different parts of the university instead of going for one big drive for making the university more sustainable. Three to four projects a year would be good.

Embedding sustainability in the curriculum is much more challenging but is possible because sustainability can be built into any subject. However, it is a long term project.

A university is a community, mainly comprising students and staff. So our students are not our customers. Finding the right ways to engage the student body with sustainability is critical for making a university more sustainable.
