BIG-ICE-SDGs-event

A talk by civil engineer Brittany Harris, titled The role of engineers in achieving global sustainable development – what can we do?, will take place at the Institution of Civil Engineers (One Great George Street, London, SW1P 3AA) at 6pm on 10 April 2018.

Organised by the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), the talk will be part of the joint meeting of Civil Engineers’ Club and ICE London Graduates and Students Network.

Brittany is Co-founder and Director of Qualis Flow, a company using IoT technology to facilitate management of environmental risk on construction sites. Before this, she worked for BuroHappold as a Civil Engineer in Water and Environment in Bath. She has a Master of Engineering (MEng) degree in Civil Engineering from Bristol University. In 2016-2017 she was NCE (New Civil Engineer) Graduate of the Year and one of the eight ICE Future Leaders (formerly President’s Apprentice).

In her talk, Brittany will explore the role that engineers could and should play in ensuring the sustainability of our planet and what they could do differently, focusing on the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that the member countries of the United Nations adopted in 2015 with a view of ending poverty, protecting the plant and ensuring prosperity for all.

The talk will follow the AGM of Commonwealth Engineers’ Council (CEC), a professional body for all engineers of the Commonwealth. It represents 45 engineering institutions in 44 countries across five continents with the aim of advancement of the science, art and practice of engineering for the benefit of humankind. The ICE serves as the Secretariat for the CEC and current CEC President is ICE Past-president Prof Paul Jowitt.

Established two centuries ago, The Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) has over 90,000 members in more than 150 countries.

This event is free to attend but prior registration is required. Please see event page below.

Titled ‘Sustainable Futures: Research, Policy and Practice’, this event will focus on research, policy and practice that will help achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goals, exploring the challenges in sustainability research at a range of scales – regional, national and international – with a view of  enhancing collaboration among academia, industry and policy.

The conference will feature:

  • A keynote speaker: Professor Patrick Paul Walsh (Professor of International Development Studies at University College Dublin and Senior Advisor to UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network SDSN, New York);
  • Some of the University’s sustainability researchers, led by Professor Phil Taylor (Director IfS); and
  • Sustainability experts from industry

The day’s programme comprises four sessions.

Session 1 (What is the role of academia in helping to meet the SDGs and where should they have input in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development?) will explore how academic research could play a greater role in policy and practice for sustainable development.

Session 2 (Addressing global challenges with integrated solutions) will introduce research from Newcastle University researchers on addressing global challenges for sustainability through integrated solutions.

Session 3, a roundtable session (How to bring research to policy for sustainable development), will bring together experts in research, policy and practice to identify how academic research and demonstration can inform policy for sustainable development in areas of air quality, energy, food, water, agriculture and waste.

A poster session will showcase some of the University’s sustainability research projects.

Please note that you can submit questions for debate in advance to sustainability@ncl.ac.uk

BREEAM Awards 2014 | Nottingham’s Energy Technology Building wins Education category award

SML-Nottingham-EnergyTechBldgsThe Energy Technology Building of the University of Nottingham won the Education category award at the BREEAM Awards presentation held in early March 2014 in London.

Launched in 1990, BREEAM (the BRE Environmental Assessment Method) – the world’s first environmental assessment method – is now used in over 70 countries worldwide, offering a variety of social, environmental and economic benefits to its clients.

Energy Technologies Building (ETB) of the University of Nottingham is an exemplar low carbon building dedicated to research and development in sustainable energy technologies.

Built using energy efficient materials and designed to minimise demands for heating, cooling, lighting and ventilation, this showcase building demonstrates a range of low carbon technologies which leads the way towards the government’s ‘zero carbon’ target for all new public buildings by 2018.

Its key elements include daylighting, thermal insulation, external shading, renewable energy, rainwater harvesting, responsible material selection, electric car charging points and ecological habits in the roof.

Designed to achieve a BREEAM ‘Outstanding’ rating, BREEAM’s highest level for environmental sustainability, this building generates more energy than it requires, heating the neighbouring Institute of Mental Health Institute Building.
