The annual conference of the UK Stakeholders for Sustainable Development (UKSSD) will take place in London (ICAEW, Chartered Accountants’ Hall, Moorgate Place, London EC2R 6EA) on 1 March 2017 from 08:30 to 17:00.

Under the theme ‘Unlocking the UK’s potential: from ambition to transformation,’ the conference will explore how to translate the ambition of the 17 Goals and 169 Targets of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into transformational action for the UK.

Hosted by The Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW), the event will bring together academics, businesses, NGOs, professionals, government and public under one banner: transformational action on SDGs for the UK.

The day’s programme comprises a main programme in Grand Hall and a sub programme (at selected times) of parallel sessions in Council Chamber and Breakout Spaces. The event will feature keynotes and a variety of sessions ranging from plenaries, presentations, drop-in surgeries and breakout spaces delivered by UKSSD partners.

Main programme (Grand Hall)

The proceedings will start with a welcome by ICAEW President Hilary Lindsay, followed by an introduction to UKSSD.

Keynote speakers are:

  • Amanda Mackenzie OBE (CEO of Business in the Community)

  • Michael Green (CEO of Social Progress Imperative)

Panel 1, on Transforming communities, comprises Dr Jane Davidson (Chair/ University of Wales Trinity Saint David UWTSD), Richard Couldrey (Transition Network), Ian Townsend (Bristol Green Capital Partnership), Conor Moloney (Carter Jonas), Katharine Knox (Joseph Rowntree Foundation) and Sara Mahmoud (Shelter). Panel 2, on Transforming lives, comprises John Elkington (Chair), Professor Kate Pickett (Equality Trust), Mike Barry (Marks & Spencer), Trewin Restorick (Hubbub) and Pragna Patel (Southall Black Sisters). Focusing on some of the key challenges facing UK society today, such as poverty, inequality, climate change and over-consumption of resources, the panellists will explore how the SDGs might be used as a framework for understanding how these issues interact, and how addressing the Goals comprehensively can transform lives in the UK.

Tanya Steele (Chief Executive of WWF-UK) will deliver closing remarks.

Session in Council Chamber

  1. […] On the 10th we drove across to Little Rissington to see the Hill House ecosystem, then back to a blizzard of events. These included meetings with people like Interface VP Erin Meezan, chairing a session at a WWF event on the Government’s Industrial Strategy in the ICAEW Great Hall on the 21st, followed by an Ecosequestration Trust Board meeting across at Imperial College; a Chilean day on the 23rd, with a visit from Angelica Cortes, followed by lunch with Maria Jesús Nilo at the British Museum Great Court restaurant; then Richard Roberts and I did a 2-hour Leaders’ Quest session for senior Cemex executives at the Building Centre on the 24th; and I was back in the ICAEW Great Hall on 1 March to chair another session, this time for the UKSSD (UK Stakeholders for Sustainable Development) annual conference.
