New QAA/HEA ESD Guidance to complement UK Quality Code for Higher Education

SML-QAA-ESD-docThe QAA/HEA ESD Guidance, titled Education for sustainable development: Guidance for UK higher education providers, was published in June 2014. It is a product of collaboration between the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA) and the Higher Education Academy (HEA).

Aim and who it is for

The guidance aims to assist staff in UK higher education institutions in incorporating education for sustainable development (ESD) within the curricula of their respective disciplines.

This reference point for use in curriculum design, delivery and review is mainly targeted at academics, educational developers and programme leaders. However, it may also be of interest to those with responsibility for quality assurance and enhancement, and the management of teaching and learning.

Although this guidance relates primarily to undergraduate provision and assessment at Level 6, it may also be helpful to educators working at other levels (e.g. Level 5, including foundation degrees, and postgraduate). Moreover, it should be read in conjunction with the appropriate QAA subject benchmark statement.

Status

Chapter B3 of the UK Quality Code for Higher Education (the Quality Code) on Learning and Teaching identifies education for sustainability (or ESD) as an educational theme that cuts across academic disciplines. This guidance therefore complements the Quality Code but does not form an explicit part of it.

Structure and content

The ESD guidance recognises that there are many ways in which ESD could be incorporated within the curricula and therefore it is not prescriptive about delivery. It only presents an outcomes-based framework for use in curriculum design, and general guidance on approaches to teaching, learning and assessment. Moreover, it is not specific to any particular degree programme or subject specialism.

The document comprises two main parts:

  • The identification of graduate outcomes: What students will be able to know, understand and do after an appropriate period of learning
  • A focus on teaching, learning and assessment: The ways in which educators can work with students to help them achieve and demonstrate the outcomes

How it was prepared

The guidance was prepared by an expert group drawn from the UK higher education community with expertise in ESD. The group was chaired by Professor James Longhurst and co-convened by Dr Laura Bellingham and Simon Kemp.

An earlier version of the guidance was subject to public consultation between November 2013 and January 2014.

For more information, please contact Dr Laura Bellingham L.Bellingham@qaa.ac.uk

ESD London Conference | Sustainability is a core theme in higher education today and will remain so tomorrow, says VC LSBU

SML-RCE-conf

Sustainability is a core theme in higher education today and will remain so in the future, said Professor David Phoenix, Vice Chancellor at London South Bank University (LSBU) at the first annual conference of the London Regional Centre of Expertise (RCE) on Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), held at LSBU on 10 June 2014.

Titled ‘ESD London: Supporting employability, society and the environment: A curriculum for sustainability,’ the event brought together educationalists, NGOs and employers with the aim of developing a London-wide community of practice in order to inspire and engage the participants in promoting a sustainable future for all. It comprised a keynote, speeches, panel Q&A, paper and poster presentations, workshops, networking opportunities and an awards presentation.

The day began with a welcome to LSBU (the host institution of the London RCE) by Professor Phoenix. Emphasizing that universities should deliver back to society, he revealed that one of the key priorities of his own institution is civic engagement and, in this endeavour, sustainability would play a key role.

Professor Ros Wade (Chair, London RCE), who led the team which achieved accreditation in 2009 from UN University for LSBU to develop the London RCE, presented an introduction to the day. In the past couple of years, London RCE has grown into a network of networks, comprising representatives from education, state, business and civil society from London and beyond. LSBU’s key strength that contributed to this achievement was its Education for Sustainability (EfS) Masters programme. Launched twenty years ago, soon after the 1992 Rio Earth Summit, this programme brought together academics and practitioners from Development Education and Environmental Education, with the involvement of Oxfam and WWF.

The morning session of the conference comprised a keynote and two speeches:

  • Keynote address | Jane Davidson, Director INSPIRE (Institute for Sustainability Practice, Innovation and Resource Effectiveness), University of Wales Trinity Saint David
  • Learning to learn for sustainability in higher education: making a difference | Professor Stephen Sterling, Head of ESD and Centre for Sustainable Futures, Plymouth University
  • Accelerating change for sustainability in higher education: A UNESCO DESD study | Professor Daniella Tilbury, Dean and Director of Sustainability, University of Gloucestershire, and Chair UNESCO Expert Group on UN Decade in ESD

Keynote address: Jane Davidson, former Minister for Environment and Sustainability and Minister for Education and Lifelong Learning in Wales, emphasized the need to ‘think global and act local’ in responding to sustainability challenges. Referring to the concept of the ecological footprint, she said that, in the economically developed world, we live as if we had a number of planets to support our lifestyles, but we have got only one. Turning to politics, she observed that elections lead to short term thinking and populism, adversely affecting the sustainability agenda. Moreover, voluntary action is sometimes not enough and an example is the necessity for plastic bag charge legislation. She also stressed that universities themselves need to think differently in the context of the challenge of sustainability.

Learning to learn for sustainability in higher education: making a difference: Professor Stephen Sterling outlined some of the challenges that universities face with respect to the sustainability in their curricula and also pathways that have emerged. He observed that the concept of sustainability raises the question of the purpose of higher education. To contribute to sustainability positively, a holistic and transformative education is required. Although a whole institutional approach to change is difficult, it would be effective in the long term. He presented the 4C model, comprising three interlocking circles of Curriculum, Campus and Community, subsumed in a wider circle of Culture, stating that it could be adopted to bring about holistic change. He also reminded that ESD can colour all areas of curricula.

Accelerating change for sustainability in higher education: A UNESCO DESD study: Professor Daniella Tilbury said that higher education has a critical role to play in developing a global vision and pathway for sustainable development. Presenting a summary of a global study carried out by the UNESCO, she revealed that, in the past decade, the progress achieved by universities worldwide in lowering carbon footprint of education is higher than that achieved in integrating sustainability into their core business, i.e. education. Moreover, she said that sustainability should form the core of what universities should be doing, not a side product. She noted that there has been much progress in networking and UN University’s global RCE network has helped universities to connect students’ learning to situated communities of practice. She also mentioned the University Educators for Sustainable Development (UE4SD) project, which brings together 55 partners (mainly universities) from 33 countries across Europe and beyond to rethink the higher education curriculum with regard to sustainable development.

Over twenty papers with ESD-related themes were presented at two workshop sessions with parallel workshops in the morning and in the afternoon. (For a full list, please visit the links below under ‘More….’). Morning workshops were chaired by Dr Hugh Atkinson (LSBU), Margaret Burr (Humanities Education Centre HEC), Shaminder Takhar (LSBU) and Anna Portch (London Environmental Education Forum LEEF). Afternoon workshops were chaired by Dr Hugh Atkinson (LSBU), John Baines (LSBU) and Falko Schmidt.

The afternoon session comprised three presentations:

  • Making a Green Impact through ESD | Jo Kemp, Green Impact Programme Manager, National Union of Students (NUS)
  • How to implement ESD within Higher Education via NUS Green Impact – a best practice example | Aisling Tierney (ESD Coordinator) and Chris Willmore (ESD Academic Lead) from the University of Bristol
  • ESD in Further Education | Esin Esat, Director of Sustainability, Bedford College

Jo Kemp said that students are saying sustainability is important. She revealed that the NUS is engaging students in sustainability in diverse ways, such as fun and collaboration (e.g. Students Switch Off, Students Eats), enabling action (e.g. Snap It Off) and working with and across institutions and communities (e.g. Students Green Fund, Green Impact).

Aisling Tierney and Chris Willmore presented the Bristol University’s ESD model, which comprises four circles comprising formal, informal and subliminal curriculum (estates) and research, subsumed by a wider circle of community. They revealed that ESD at Bristol hasn’t got committees but only a network, enabling experimentation, quick action and bottom-up approach. Willmore said sustainability should be fun, about celebration and about giving ownership (Don’t tell students, etc, what to do; ask what their next step is).

Esin Esat presented an overview on ESD in further education and said that the most important for the future of ESD in further education is student and staff engagement.

Among the other presentations were:

  • Providing an efficient, flexible, healthy and environmentally friendly solution to travel for the future | Harry Scrope (Brompton Dock)
  • The UN Global Compact and Principles of Responsible Management Education (PRME) | David Clemson (LSBU, Copernicus Alliance and PRME) and John Peters (Greenleaf Publishing)
  • Environmental Association for Universities and Colleges (EAUC) and Green Gown Awards | Fiona Goodwin (EAUC)
  • Journal contributions | Andrew Jones (Editor of the journal Local Economy)

Lynn Vickery (LSBU and Co-ordinator, London RCE) presented the awards for the best paper and poster submissions.

The London RCE organised the conference in partnership with 4 All of Us and the event was supported by the EAUC, the London Universities Environmental Group (LUEG), NUS, Change Agents UK, Greenleaf Publishing, PRME, Brompton Dock and Open Air Laboratories (OPAL) network.

The London RCE on ESD is part of the UN University’s global RCE network on ESD, comprising over 100 RCEs worldwide.

Sustainable Lifestyles conference | Good life of the good person is only possible in a good society, says Prof Jackson

SML-SLRG-PostEvnt

Good life of the good person is only possible in a good society, said Professor Tim Jackson at the Sustainable Lifestyles Research Group (SLRG) dissemination conference on ‘Sustainable Living: myths, meanings and realities’ held in London on 3 June 2014.

Building on over a decade of research, the conference synthesised the lessons from the group’s work on developing new understandings of the processes which lead to changes in people’s lifestyles, behaviours and practices and offered evidence-based advice to policy-makers hoping to build and nurture more sustainable ways of living.

The event kicked off with a welcome by Professor Tim Jackson (Director, SLRG).

In her introduction, Zoe Donkin from Defra (Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs) identified the SLRG as an excellent model of government working in partnership with the academia.

The day was structured into four sessions under the following themes:

  • Exploring transition
  • The role of community
  • Challenges and opportunities
  • Synthesis

Exploring transition

Professor Bas Verplanken (Professor of Social Psychology, University of Bath) spoke on Habits, Attitudes and Behaviours in Transition (HABiT) project. Life course transitions such as moving to a new home could provide a window of opportunity for effective interventions for sustainable behaviour change. When this study delivered an intervention to a group of participants who had recently moved house, there was a small but statistically significant increase in self-reported sustainable behaviour with the window of opportunity lasting three months after moving house. Because of the small effect size, blank roll-outs are not recommended but locations in which many people going through life course transitions (e.g. newly built residential areas) tend to offer opportunities for such interventions.

Dr Kate Burningham (Senior Lecturer in Sociology of the Environment, University of Surrey) spoke on Exploring Lifestyle Changes in Transition (ELiCiT) project. This study explored the effect of two household transitions – having a first child and retirement – on sustainable consumption. It found that life course transitions are a fluid process of continuing shifts and readjustments within which everyday practices undergo change in multiple ways. Interventions for sustainable living should account for the multiplicity and nature of household transitions and the significance of family relationships and concerns in informing what people do. The participants’ understandings of what constitutes a sustainable lifestyle were varied and not necessarily perceived as being related to environmental sustainability. Potential points of intervention include already existing information and support sources (e.g. parental support groups) and their own social networks and hubs.

The role of community

This session comprised four presentations, the first three being:

  • Sustainable living in remote rural Scotland | Emily Creamer (University of Edinburgh)
  • Civil society roles in transition | Rachel Durrant (University of Sussex)
  • Resilience in sustainable food strategies | Dr Rebecca White (University of Sussex)

Professor Andy Stirling (Professor of Science and Technology Policy, University of Sussex) spoke on ‘Control and transformation in sustainable lifestyles’. Referring to the findings of the second (‘transition’) and third (‘resilience’) projects above, he focused on some general implications for thinking about policy making for transformative change in infrastructures and practices in order to achieve demanding sustainability goals in the food sector. A cross-cutting outcome of these projects is the elaboration of a new framework for thinking (and acting) to enable transformation towards sustainability. He presented a framework that summarises the relationships between four ‘necessary but insufficient’ properties of sustainability, as functions of different permutations of shock and stress, control and response.

Challenges and opportunities

Invited guest speaker Dr Helga Dittmar (Reader in Psychology, University of Sussex) spoke on ‘The limits of materialism: impacts on wellbeing and the environment’, focusing on the link between materialistic value orientation (MVO) and wellbeing. MVO is the endorsement of values, goals and beliefs that centre on collecting money and possessions to convey status and image. There exists strong research evidence that people with stronger MVO experience lower wellbeing and show less environmentally friendly attitudes and behaviours and the same is true for children. Research also shows that materialism undermines children’s learning and school performance.

Ian Christie (Research Coordinator, SLRG) spoke on ‘Policy dialogues in sustainable living’. In the context of growing interest among policy communities in policy evaluation and in the relationship between research-based evidence and the policy development process, this project has explored issues concerning the relationship between research and policy development, adopting a methodology based on in-depth interviews with expert informants. Reinforcing the message from the literature on research-policy interactions, the study found that there are no ‘golden threads’ from evidence to readily identifiable policy impacts within a clear cycle of policy development. Rather, the focus should be on the fields of influence for research and the importance of multiple contexts and uses of evidence. These factors need to be reflected in new approaches to research-policy dialogue and relationships.

Dr Steve Sorrell (University of Sussex) spoke on ‘The rebound effect: measurement and response’.

Synthesis

Professor Tim Jackson, speaking on ‘Sustainable living: myths, meanings and realities’, synthesised the day’s presentations.

Led by Professor Jackson, a panel discussion on ‘Foundations for sustainable living’ followed with a panel comprising Dr Helga Dittmar, Mike Barry (Marks & Spencer), Lee Davies (Defra) and Graham Smith (University of Westminster).

In closing remarks, Jonathan Tillson (Defra) focused on the strategic relationship between policymakers and researchers, highlighting the key benefits of the Research Group approach, namely linking research to policy thinking, strategic investment and impact generation.

The SLRG

The Sustainable Lifestyles Research Group (SLRG) aims to develop understandings of the processes which lead to changes in people’s lifestyles, behaviours and practices and also to offer evidence-based advice to policy-makers about realistic strategies to encourage more sustainable lifestyles. Moreover, it strives for building capacity for research in sustainable lifestyles amongst academics, young researchers, practitioners, and user communities.

The group’s research portfolio comprises around a dozen projects within four main research clusters:

  • Community | Sustainable Living in Remote Rural Scotland, Resilience and Sustainable Lifestyles, Civil society in sustainability transitions of food systems
  • Economy | Mapping rebound effects from sustainable behaviours, Price Responsiveness of Demand
  • Change processes | The HABIT project, Exploring Lifestyle Change in Transition (ELiCiT), Children and the Environment
  • Synthesis | Directions of Policy Dialogue, Foundations for Sustainable Living

The SLRG research programme is coordinated from the University of Surrey (Centre for Environmental Strategy) under the direction of Professor Tim Jackson with Ian Christie as the Research Coordinator. Its partners include the University of Bath, Edinburgh University, the University of Sussex, the Institute for Fiscal Studies and Brunel University and it also works closely with non-academic partners including Peterborough City Council, the RSA and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

The group receives core funding from the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra), the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) and the Scottish Government and additional funding for individual projects from the European Commission and the ESRC.

Informal communication has a key role in sustainability-oriented institutional change, says Green Academy Lead at Worcester

SML1-ImageMAIN-HEA-WorcesterInformal communication has a key role to play in driving sustainability-oriented institutional change, said Antonius Raghubansie (Green Academy Lead at the University of Worcester UW) at a workshop titled ‘The Worcester sustainability model now and the future: maintaining momentum from the green academy’ held at the university on 28 May 2014.

??????????????????????

Hosted as part of the Workshop and Seminar Series 2013/2014 of the Higher Education Academy (HEA), this event shared and reflected on the approaches used at Worcester to create Institutional change in response to the sustainability challenge, discussed examples across subject disciplines and showcased the project work of students.

The event started with a welcome by Dr Marie Stow???????????????????????ell (Director of Quality and Educational Development UW), who emphasised on the importance of impacting on students’ attitudes and values with a view of building a community of practice rather than merely teaching about sustainability.

Representing the HEA, Helen Howard outlined the HEA Green Academy programme and said that sustainability is important for universities to enhance the effectiveness of learning. She also highlighted that innovation, a key element in institutional sustainability programmes, would depend on the different contexts of respective institutions.

The day was structured around three main sessions:

  • Curriculum and Engagement (followed by Panel Questions and Answers)
  • Examples of Sustainability in the Curriculum from across UW (followed by Panel Q&A)
  • Participant workshop: Marginal Gains

Will Bowen-Jones (Head of Education Development Unit) kicked off the first session, on Curriculum and Engagement. Speaking on the Learning & Teaching Strategy and sustainability at Worcester, he highlighted that producing graduates who are ethically and environmentally responsible is central to the university’s strategic plan.

Katy Boom (Director of Environmental Sustainability UW), speaking on Campus and Community, revealed how the university uses both community projects and the campus as curricula and extra curricula sustainability opportunities for student learning. She focused on a number of flagship projects, including Energize Worcester funded by the NUS Students Green Fund. She also elaborated on the types of funding available for curriculum projects.

Peng Li (Project Manager Energize Worcester UW), presenting the student perspective, revealed that the majority of the students want their universities to become more sustainable.

Antonius Raghubansie (Green Academy Lead and Associate Head, Worcester Business School UW), speaking on the university’s distinctive Sustainability Elective for all disciplines, revealed the story behind its development and stressed on the key role that informal communication had played in the process, particularly in the initial stages. He also highlighted the distinctive elements of this elective, including the student-centred approach, the focus on personal responsibility, assessment through live projects and the virtual learning environment (VLE).

Wendy Corbett (Digital Publishing Creative Consultant and Visiting Lecturer in Design and Creative Digital Media), spoke on linking curriculum, campus, community and co-creating knowledge through creative digital technologies and online learning and teaching strategies. She presented the digital magazine hosted by the university, www.susthingsout.com, which comprises an external facing side (a publishing platform) and an internal learning side, which only students and staff can access. She observed that, in the absence of instructor competence and course content, no amount of technology would add value to learning.

Professor Stephen Martin (Visiting Professor), speaking on ‘Managing Complexity: Integrating the “Witness” Session,’ stressed on the importance of building bridges between the university and its wider community. He stated that universities should bring interdisciplinarity and complexity into the lecture rooms so that, when students leave as graduates, whey would be well prepared for the messy outer world.

During the lunch break, the participants visited student displays and engaged in discussions. Moreover, adding a touch of celebration to the event, Steve Egan (Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the Higher Education Funding Council for England HEFCE) presented the Energize Worcester Energy Saving Champion 2014 award to Anthony Ball.

The second session, on Examples of Sustainability in the Curriculum, consisted of the following:

  • Green Design | Andy Stevenson (Senior Lecturer, Graphic Design & Multimedia)
  • The Business Curriculum | Dr Mike Bagshaw (Senior Lecturer, Leadership)
  • Sports Science and Sport Studies Curriculum | Lerverne Barber (Associate Head, Institute of Sport and Exercise Science)
  • Masters in Sustainable Development Advocacy | Christianne Wakeham (Course Leader)

The third session was a participant workshop on Marginal Gains, led by Will Bowen-Jones. In this small group work, which used a sustainability café approach, the participants shared ideas, perspectives and experience, building on the content of the earlier presentations.

The workshop was followed by an optional tour of The Hive, UK’s first public/university library, which is a partnership between the University of Worcester and Worcestershire County Council. Leading the tour, Iain Paul (Design Manager), revealed how vision, leadership, collaboration and consultation with many stakeholders paved the way for this multiple award winning joint library and history centre, housed in an ‘Outstanding’ sustainable building.
