House of Commons launch: UK’s Rio+20 Manifesto to strengthen education’s role in sustainable development

SML-Rio+20-manifestoA Manifesto for Dialogue, Collaboration and Action post Rio+20, UK’s Rio+20 Manifesto to strengthen education’s role in sustainable development, will be launched at the House of Commons London on 17 December 2013 (11:00-13:00). This manifesto is facilitated by the Environmental Association for Universities and Colleges (EAUC).

This is a free event; however, prior registration is required (For registration, the link to the relevant EAUC webpage could be found below this news post).

Hosted by Joan Walley MP (Chair of the Environmental Audit Select Committee), this event will include an introduction to the Manifesto by Harriet Sjerps-Jones (EAUC and University of Exeter); a Roundtable Session led by Ann Finlayson (Chief Executive, Sustainability and Environmental Education SEEd and former Commissioner, Sustainable Development Commission) and Iain Patton (Chief Executive, EAUC); and Witness Accounts – among the confirmed witnesses are Caroline Lucas MP, Steve Egan (Higher Education Funding Council for England HEFCE), Dom Anderson (National Union of Students NUS), university students, youth representatives and school children.

The intergovernmental agreements that came out of Rio+20 United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD) (The Future We Want) included commitments to quality education, to improve quality of life, to Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) and to embark on a process towards Sustainable Development Goals. The Conference also emphasised ESD’s key role in achieving a sustainable future.

UK’s Rio+20 Manifesto, the result of a UK-wide consultation from November 2012 to May 2013 in response to The Future We Want, calls on Governments (UK government and the devolved governments of Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales), education providers, NGOs and civil society in the UK to work more closely together to strengthen the role of education as an enabler of sustainable development.

The manifesto also calls for supporting mechanisms that governments and civil society should put in place to enable and strengthen UK delivery of the educational commitments agreed in The Future We Want:

Government

  • Better coordination of efforts and collaboration between governments and across government departments on formal and informal learning for sustainable development
  • Improvement of dialogue between the education sector, civil society and government departments
  • Enabling education sectors to develop an appropriate curriculum to meet current and future sustainability challenges through a realignment of funding with The Future We Want in mind

Formal learning

  • Curriculum change (e.g. sustainability in curricula, interdisciplinary learning opportunities)
  • Institutional change (e.g. education institutions providing leadership in sustainable development and working closely with local communities)

Informal learning

  • Improved collaboration between NGOs and formal education institutions

Economy-ESD connection

  • Improved collaboration among state, charity, business and education sectors to ensure that the young are better prepared for the opportunities and challenges of a green and fair economy
