UCL symposium focuses on Sustainable Resources for Sustainable Cities

??????????????????????

As part of the BHP Billiton Sustainable Communities/UCL Grand Challenge Symposium Series, a symposium on Sustainable Resources for Sustainable Cities was held at University College London (UCL) on 5 and 6 November 2013.

Hosted by the UCL Grand Challenge for Sustainable Cities and the UCL Institute for Sustainable Resources (UCL ISR), the two-day event specifically looked to address the challenges around provision of resources for growing urban populations, with regard to the physical built environment, infrastructure, transport and water.

The programme of Day 1 on ‘Urban metabolism, feeding the city,’ comprised three sessions – Urban Challenges, Resource supply and Resource consumption – and a keynote address by Professor Herbert Girardet, co-founder of the World Future Council (WFC) on ‘Urban Metabolism’.

On Day 2 on ‘Research into action’, following an introduction by Professor Raimund Bleischwitz (BHP Billiton Chair in Sustainable Global Resources, UCL ISR), Dr Michele Acuto (Senior Lecturer in Global Networks and Diplomacy, UCL) chaired a panel discussion on Cities in Transition. The panel comprised:

  • Dr Inge Paulini (Secretary General, German Advisory Council on Global Change)
  • Rt Hon Charles Clarke (Honorary Professor of Economic Policy and Migration, UCL)
  • Professor Herbert Giradet (Co-founder, World Future Council and Visiting Professor, University of the West of England UWE)
  • Dr Lily Song (Provost (Postdoctoral) Fellow, UCL)
  • Professor Tadj Oreszczyn (Director of the UCL Energy Institute, Director of the RCUK Centre for Energy Epidemiology (CEE) and Professor of Energy and Environment)
  • Dr Yacob Mulugetta (Reader in the Centre for Environmental Strategy at the University of Surrey)

UCL Grand Challenges is a mechanism that brings together concentrations of specialist expertise across UCL and beyond to address aspects of the world’s key problems. It comprises Global Health, Sustainable Cities, Intercultural Interaction and Human Wellbeing.

The UCL Institute for Sustainable Resources generates knowledge in the globally sustainable use of natural resources and trains the future leaders of this field.
