A national conference Quality Assurance, Enhancement and Education for Sustainable Development (ESD): Creating a Framework for Dialogue was held on 2 July 2012 at Aston University, UK. Anthony McClaran, CEO of the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA), delivered the keynote address ‘ESD and the quality landscape – policy, practice, priorities.’
A panel discussion on ‘ESD and quality – pathways and perspectives’ was followed by three parallel workshops on Leadership and change, Capacity building and CPD and National guidance on ESD. The programme also included an ESD and Quality Chat Show on student engagement and graduate profiles.
The conference was informed by Leading Curriculum Change for Sustainability: Strategic Approaches to Quality Enhancement, a project funded by the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE). This two-year project, scheduled to end in September 2012, is a result of the recognition of the need for strategic work to scale up efforts on ESD through the quality assurance and enhancement systems of higher education. Led by the University of Gloucestershire, the project operates through an institutional arm (a consortium of five universities comprising Gloucestershire, Aston, Brighton, Exeter and Oxford Brookes) and a sector arm (working with QAA, Higher Education Academy and an Expert Advisory Board chaired by QAA).
