Leeds Metropolitan launches Sustainability Institute

Leeds Metropolitan University launched the Leeds Sustainability Institute on 30 March 2012. Jonathon Porritt, founder of Forum for the Future, delivered the keynote address at the launch.

The institute aims to tackle the challenges of creating more sustainable places, communities and economies to enable society and its infrastructure to become sustainable. Its core themes are People and Places, Infrastructure, Buildings and the Environment, Business Practice, Energy, Design and Ecological Engineering, and Information and Communication Technologies.

Greening the FE & HE Sectors – National Conference and Exhibition

The second annual National Greening the FE (Further Education) & HE (Higher Education) Sectors Conference and Exhibition: Promoting Environmental, Economic and Social Sustainability will be held at The Brewery in London on 30 May 2012.

Presented by Govtoday, this conference will explore the direction that Further and Higher Education Institutions should take in order to lower environmental impacts while delivering the requirements of sustainable economic growth.

Mayor announces Low Carbon Prize winners

The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, announced the winners of the Mayor’s Low Carbon Prize at the award ceremony in City Hall in London on 6 March 2012.

The competition invited from students of universities and colleges in London original ideas that would contribute towards reducing CO2 emissions from London’s buildings. Out of over 100 entries, six winners received prize money, totalling £20,000, to develop their ideas. The panel included high profile judges such as Sir Terry Farrell and Zac Goldsmith MP.

The Berkeley Group sponsored the contest, which was supported by the London Universities Environment Group (LUEG).

Sustainable University website wins Bright Ideas prize

The Sustainable University One-stop Shop secured a First Prize at the WestFocus Bright Ideas awards ceremony held at the University of Westminster on 15 February 2012. Developed from free web resources, it offers guidance, information, inspiration and networking for promoting Sustainability in Higher Education worldwide.
